Since the introduction of The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, there is now a statutory requirement on all businesses to meet certain defined requirements. Although the requirement for fire risk assessments was originally introduced in 1996, The Fire Safety Order placed a greater emphasis on them and it is now a statutory requirement for all businesses that employ 5 staff or more to have a current and documented fire risk assessment. It is also now a statutory requirement for all businesses to appoint a senior manager as the Responsible Person who is ultimately responsible to ensure that the business meets all its responsibilities under the Fire Safety Order.
