Legal Awards 2020
19 | SME NEWS - Legal Awards 2020 Based in London, Comptons Solicitors LLP is a boutique law firm specialising in property litigation and residential conveyancing. We got in touch with Jon Finebaum, Partner at the firm, to find out more. Founded in the late 1980s, Comptons Solicitors has been a long-standing paragon on the UK’s property law landscape. However, despite its thirty-year history, Jon emphasises that the firm is thoroughly modern in its approach, adapting to the needs of its clients through innovation and honed expertise. Above all else, the firm relies heavily on an approach that can best be defined by client centricity – a view that the business revolves entirely around the individual needs of the client. Jon takes a moment to explain that ethos in more detail. “Here at Comptons Solicitors LLP, our ethos is to lead clients safely through using specialist legal advice from experienced solicitors, accompanied by practical solutions. In order to provide the best possible service, we filter out the complexity, identify the potential pitfalls and empower clients to make the right decisions.” A lack of transparency is an oft-stated criticism of the law industry, though the same certainly can’t be said of Comptons. “By working together, our friendly, approachable and skilled team achieve client goals using the highest of professional standards and state of the art technology. Our approach works and the vast majority of new clients come through either personal or professional recommendations.” Obviously, this is no accident, with Comptons holding its internal culture as a fulcrum for the entire business’s enduring success. “Ultimately, we are committed to building long-term relationships with our clients, working as one unit to fully service their requirements. We are always keen to talk to individuals who demonstrate our core values of respecting and working for each other and showing the utmost professionalism when dealing with clients. “Moreover, Comptons are committed to maintaining a working environment which provides Best Boutique Property Law Firm – London & Leading Legal Mind in Landlord/Tenant Litigation (London): Jon Finebaum Comptons Solicitors LLP equality and freedom from unlawful discrimination on the grounds of race, sex, pregnancy and maternity, marital or civil partnership status, gender reassignment, disability, religion or beliefs, age or sexual orientation.” Jon briefly goes on to describe the methods by which Comptons has maintained its reputation in a competitive sector that moves swiftly – constantly – forward. “Working in such a competitive industry means you have to remain committed to innovation and that is no different at Comptons. We have set up a specialist department aimed at flat owners called the Lease Clinic which is marketed separately from the main firm. In 2010, The Lease Clinic was shortlisted by the Law Society for a business and marketing award in excellence. The Lease Clinic was also winner of an ERMA, the industry awards for enfranchisement. We also have our own brand, the steel butterfly which is central to our firm’s presence on social media.” However, despite its success, it would be dishonest to say that the firm hasn’t faced its fair share of challenges over the years. One of the most prominent throughout the decades has been recruitment – specifically, finding the best possible talent to bolster the company’s offerings. “Hiring the finest talent available can be quite challenging in such a competitive industry, however by providing a supportive and friendly working environment with outstanding opportunities to grow and develop, we believe Comptons is a great place to work. Having respect for each other is one of our key values, and this is reflected in our diversity and inclusion policies, which cover everything from recruitment and selection to parental leave and flexible working. In addition, we constantly monitor diversity levels throughout the firm to ensure we are equal and open minded in our recruitment approach.” As Jon continues, he explains that recruitment is – naturally- far from the biggest challenge facing the firm at the moment. “Although recruitment can be a challenging process, arguably the biggest challenge for us at the moment is the impact of COVID-19. Having to change from an office-based practice to one which works remotely is different to us all and one we are still adapting to. However, with the commitment and dedication of our staff I’m confident we will come out of this difficult time. “Looking ahead to the future we will be looking to develop our brand and other areas of our firm’s practice whilst considering expanding our remote working system,” Jon concludes in his closing comments.
