The dynamic young company is based in Glossop and is headed up by Managing Director Paul McHugh. We take a look at Complexa HPE, its challenges and ambitions for the future. Medical Injection Mould Solutions MD of the Year 2024: Paul McHugh Injection moulding is critical for producing a wide range of medical products including surgical instruments, diagnostic devices, drug delivery systems and laboratory equipment. The specialised process involves injecting molten plastic material into a mould cavity. This is then cooled and solidified into the desired shape. Medical components often require high levels of precision to meet stringent standards. Therefore it’s no surprise that the design and manufacture of the moulds themselves necessitates an elevated level of engineering competence and expertise. Working with Class 101 materials, Complexa HPE produces the finest quality moulds from the highest quality steel. The company is proud of its British manufacturing heritage and has built a loyal customer base. Paul tells us about his journey to MD and beyond, “I started as an apprentice in 1996 and worked my way up through the ranks. I was a supervisor before being promoted to production manager at a young age. I’ve worked alongside the best in the industry and soaked up as much knowledge as possible. I’m very thankful for all the help I’ve received over the years, it’s been a fantastic experience.” The team at Complexa HPE currently numbers 39 skilled workers across 2 sites in Glossop and Manchester and the company will shortly be opening its third site in Rochdale. By the end of the year, Paul hopes to employ an additional 12 staff. This will increase capability and enable the company to attract additional large projects. So what are Paul’s secrets to success? He explains, “I’ve been MD for 4 years now. Sometimes it can be a tough and lonely place, but we are lucky to have a team that’s second to none and that makes the sacrifices worthwhile. We’re always professional and quality comes first. Every day is a new challenge and we value the contribution of every team member. Each person works to their strengths and is responsible for the excellent results and outstanding feedback we receive.” Having highly skilled and competent workers in this precision industry is not negotiable. But for Paul, there are other traits which are equally as important. He tells us, “Each team member must also be a good fit for the team. That means having a compatible personality, the right mindset and values. They must be highly motivated, loyal and able to act on their initiative.” Complexa HPE’s management team ensures that the company’s workflow is as efficient as possible. That means achieving maximum output whilst maintaining the high standards the company has built its reputation on. Paul says, “We have an open-door policy. We are all approachable and will offer support where needed. Everyone in the team is as valuable to the business as each other.
