Managing Director of the Year Awards 2024

Formed in 2017 with an ambition to raise standards in programme delivery and provide sustainable solutions to the challenges presented by climate change, Anturas Consulting Ltd (Anturas) is diverse in experience, with each team member having approached the project lifecycle as consultant, contractor and client. Therefore, the company understands the pitfalls inherent to programme delivery, and is wellequipped to maximise efficiencies and minimise waste. Anturas is highly skilled at supporting clients in business transformation bought on by either a major infrastructure programme, regulation change or by the needs for businesses to do things differently. The firm’s main focus is supporting client organisations, generally in the public sector, delivering major infrastructure projects, either directly or through tier 1 consultants and contractors. “We take pride in our agility, as we believe one-size-fits-all approaches are not suited to programmes at scale,” explains Catherine Leech, the firm’s Managing Director. “Our culture is therefore one of continual learning — honest, respectful and celebrating difference — in order to build strong relationships with our clients, their teams and partners.” With a background as a chartered civil engineer, Catherine has worked for contractors, client bodies and consultants. This has given her a rounded understanding of the needs of the construction industry and its clients when delivering major infrastructure projects. Throughout her 30 years of experience, Catherine has been responsible for managing day-to-day delivery of activities as well as forward planning activities and, latterly in her career, she was responsible for setting the strategic direction of projects or key activities in a project. “A strategic direction is required to ensure all parties have a shared vision for projects outcomes,” Catherine elaborates. “By setting this early in the project lifecycle the outcomes required for each individual entity can dovetail into the overall outcome. The setting of strategic direction very much sits in my role as the managing director.” In more specific terms, Anturas has two teams with very targeted, but different, skill sets which support programmes and projects. The advisory team members establish and manage overall project delivery, supporting clients to ensure time and cost constraints are being managed. The assurance team support clients to ensure their new asset is built to the required safety and technical standard required. “As a practitioner in the industry I could work in both side of the business,” continues Catherine. “This allows me to create a harmonious business as I understand the challenges that both teams face.” Describing herself as an open person, Catherine believes that the team should be brought on the business journey together, with all team members having an active role to enhance that journey. She sees her role very much as leading the senior team and driving consensus on the direction of travel, while maintaining the strong vision for the business. However, guiding a company forward with a strategic business objective in place isn’t always easy and Catherine tells us more about the darker side of the job and how she combats negativity. “To become a Managing Director you need to understand yourself and how you are viewed by others,” she elaborates. “This is quite a painful Anturas Consulting Ltd is a management consultancy business headquartered in Edinburgh which provides trusted support and advice to help clients deliver large-scale programmes, improving the built environment. We hear from Managing Director, Catherine Leech, about how she leads the firm to help make cities healthier, happier places to live and work, as she is recognised in the Managing Director of the Year Awards 2024. Most Client-Focused Construction MD 2024: Catherine Leech experience at times, but only by reflecting on your behaviours can you drive successful behaviours in your business. “I like to start each day afresh and build on the good things from previous days and reflect on the not so good points from previous days. This reflection piece is about me understanding how my actions have driven less than favourable outcomes and to understand what not to do in future.” It is due to this refreshing attitude of self-reflection that has earned Catherine a place in the Managing Director of the Year Awards, being rewarded with the title of Most Client-Focused Construction MD 2024. Today, Anturas is currently growing as a business and Catherine’s future goal is to do this in a sustainable way with people entering the business who will be a good fit. Professionally, she is targeting improving her leadership capabilities and then using these capabilities to support the team to be the best it can possibly be.
