The HARTMANN Group (HARTMANN) was founded in 1818 and has long been a leading provider of medical devices and solutions to patients worldwide. Active in 37 countries and hitting more than 130 global markets thanks to its 10,000+ employees. The company is headquartered in Germany, a nation renowned for its engineering and manufacturing prowess. HARTMANN’s presence in the UK is equally impressive, and we spoke with Julia O’Grady, the MD of the UK company, to learn more about what sets it apart in this space. Medical Solutions Supply MD of the Year 2025: Julia O’Grady & Business Leadership & Dedication Excellence Award 2025 “Helps. Cares. Protects.” Channelling its unique clinical and medical expertise into solutions united under one common aim; to improve the lives and work of medical professionals, patients, and consumers as far as possible, HARTMANN has carved out a name for itself as one of the world’s most trusted names in the field of medical solutions. More than 200 years of ongoing innovation across its products, services, and digital solutions has proven key in it doing so, something reflected in the organisation’s ultimate goal of adding international market value. HARTMANN succeeds in its mission by focusing on three key segments, the first of which is wound care, with the brand’s long heritage in this space displayed across its array of traditional and advanced wound dressings. From managing chronic wounds to supporting post-surgery recovery, these products more than meet the needs of modern clinicians, thanks to the combination of highquality design and a user-friendly application. RespoSorb Silicone, bordered and unbordered, its new line of silicone-coated, skinfriendly dressings, is just the latest example of HARTMANN’s prowess here. The second is incontinence. The MoliCare® range sees high-performance products delivered to help people tackle this taboo yet frequent condition, achieved through the likes of its MoliCare SkinGuard® absorbent core technology. This unique technology offers benefits including faster urine absorption and has been designed especially to reduce skin irritation across the brand’s range of disposable and washable absorbent underwear. In this area, Julia told us: “Our clients are predominately consumers purchasing products via our online shop or other e-resellers, or they are healthcare professionals managing those with more severe incontinence, accessing our products via the NHS or our distribution partners.” Lastly, HARTMANN’s third focus area is infection prevention. This covers everything from hand disinfectants and surgical gloves through to full kits for use in operating theatres. In a post-COVID world, these tools remain more critical than ever. Across these niches, HARTMANN excels thanks to its high performance, customer-oriented nature, and passionate team. Concerning its UK operation specifically, Julia explained: “Our recent engagement survey indicated that our team engagement is in the top percentile of similar companies, and that our team particularly value both working with each other and the career development/progress offered. These values are not just internal, they are visible in how we behave with partners, regulators, and the communities we serve.” As the woman in charge of this operation, is it Julia’s job to lead her team with a clear, aligned vision, taking the global mission, values, and strategy of the wider HARTMANN brand but tailoring its offerings to the unique needs of UK customers and its healthcare system. Julia’s success in doing so comes from a leadership philosophy based on empowerment and trust, which lends itself to the strong, people-first culture the division enjoys and fuels its success with clients from the NHS and pharmacies through to private consumers. “Every day I ask myself: ‘How will the business be stronger or better off because of what I do today?’ This keeps me focused on what really matters.” Julia’s immense experience also fuels her tireless dedication and unrivalled business leadership abilities. Julia’s career has taken her from entry-level clinical roles to senior leadership positions at companies such as Abbott Nutrition, before she became the managing director of HARTMANN South Africa in 2018, during the organisation’s 200th anniversary celebrations. Joining HARTMANN UK three years ago, Julia has continuously thrived by turning challenges into windows of opportunity. Looking ahead, Julia remains committed to walking this path with HARTMANN, which aims to continue to achieve its goals, improve its market position, and to listen and provide the right solutions for its customers’ needs. With Julia spearheading these initiatives, success is sure to follow, and people across the UK afforded the best medical solutions for their particular needs. All of this would be impossible without the team of talented individuals Julia leads, a group constantly growing, developing, and delivering.
