6 | Midlands Enterprise Awards 2020 Sep20936 Best Trade Union Support Service - UK Based accessibly in Quorn in Leicestershire, the General Federation of Trade Unions (GFTU) and its Educational Trust have imaginatively put a range of services together that can benefit the sector. Deep rooted and well established with 120 years of experience behind it, the GFTU is playing an imaginative, modern role to meet a variety of needs including those of SMEs. The GFTU supports and provides services for twenty-six affiliated unions across the economy, from professional footballers and cricketers to hospital consultants, steel workers to early year’s workers, artists to social workers. Yet its services extend way beyond this and are designed to especially help SMEs in the region. The GFTU believes strongly that Britain must build back better after Covid and is keen to help regeneration for us all. Quorn Grange Hotel owned by the GFTU’s Trust sits in eight acres of award winning gardens. With its sixty five bedrooms, conference facilities and well equipped classrooms, it is the perfect setting for business events, leisure and community. You will receive a very warm welcome from General Manager Andrea O’Dwyer. It is also ideally suited to host training and the GFTU itself provides a vast range of very affordable and sometimes free training. This can be accredited through the GFTU’s Institute of Leadership and Management awarding centre status, or its own systems. Training possibilities are extensive across the educational spectrum: functional skills, workplace related compliance issues such as health and safety, advanced organisational and business planning, team building, grant finding etc. Complementing its suite of training are over 60 direct services that the GFTU provides. These can be back office admin back up, expert ICT systems advice, events organisation, marketing and promotions, payroll, management accounts, disputes resolution. GFTU’s accountants take on full accountancy and audit work for organisations and this is proving increasingly popular. Head of Finance Heather Bundock is very keen to offer support. In the days when slips and trips in employment practice and difficult staffing decisions have to be made, GFTU’s new prestigious employment related assistance is affordable and essential helping to avoid costly mistakes. There is an online subscription portal called Emplaw, one of the most comprehensive and easy to navigate resources in the country that has won many accolades. It’s a 24/7, 365 service. There is also a superb newsletter written in plain English by the country’s leading barristers in these areas of employment law. It has its own publishing house and experience of producing internationally acclaimed books and CDs. All of these services and many more generate revenue for a charity which reinvests in education for the GFTU’s affiliates and partners.
