Smart-Space is a business rooted in customer care, flexibility and a can-do attitude. Having been around for more than 30 years and with plenty of ambition and continued growth, the company recognises that its success is down to its people. “We have long since realised that we are only as good as the teams we have in place, each of which is focused and understands its own function but also dovetails with everyone around them to create a genuinely good customer experience” commented Sales Director Jason Lynock. One of the things that always strikes Smart-Space is the different levels of supply that its customers prefer. On one hand there are those who are simply looking for straightforward supply and installation. Typically they might have had a building from Smart-Space before or are in the kind of industry where they have in-house expertise. Conversely, they also work with organisations of all sizes who ask them to take care of everything, from design and planning right through to maintenance and after-care. How it all starts… Smart-Space has the infrastructure to manage exactly what the customer needs. It almost always begins with a site visit from one of the sales team; a conversation to establish what the building will be used for, followed by a site survey and quotation. Sometimes, at this point, regardless of the services required, the brief might change. The teams knows from experience what won’t work, pass planning or suit the intended application so they’ll advise accordingly. A growing team… The Smart-Space teams have expanded over the past few years so they have impressive pools of talent – and they really know what they’re talking about. Just a couple of years ago the business moved into great new premises and they’re already expanding out of it! They quickly built a second car park and are also happy to let office and sales staff work remotely where it’s viable – it works really well, especially as the field sales team are mostly on the road visiting customers. Sales expertise… The teams within the business work together to provide a comprehensive service. The Smart-Space sales people have the experience to advise customers on their building type and size, working with them to achieve the best solution. They are able to offer four different kinds of building and they also have the skills to create clever, bespoke solutions such as covered tunnels and specialist sports facilities. Indeed the business works in several sectors including logistics, warehousing, education, healthcare, automotive and more so there are always new challenges. UK Sales Manager Shaun Stephens has been with Smart-Space for several years and his time-served understanding is incredibly valuable when it comes to advising customers. “Sometimes I can see exactly what the customer is asking for but know it won’t work for a number of reasons. It’s my job to find a solution that’s as close as possible to their vision but that will also tick all the boxes in terms of planning and health and safety” said Shaun. Going to site… The site survey team look at the logistics in a little more depth, factoring in use, utilities, boundaries and any unique information that relates to the site. Planning permission is something undertaken regularly by Smart-Space but equally can be managed by the customer if preferred. “We have planning expertise in-house and sometimes refer to a specialist if we need to. It’s something of a myth that temporary buildings don’t need planning – we usually know what will or won’t be acceptable although it can vary from postcode to postcode” explained Will Mason, SmartSpace’s Project Manager. The importance of plans… If a customer needs drawings Smart-Space has skilled CAD designers who can show the building elevations from every angle – it’s very useful for the planning permission process and also for the customer’s own general project planning. The projects team is incredibly talented and methodical. It’s an expanding group with a great depth of knowledge. Bringing it all together… Matt Jarvis, Operations Director, works closely with Matt Lymer who manages the warehouse team and Russ Slater who manages the operations team. There’s a lot to do in terms of project co-ordination: from making sure they have the correct materials and installation supplies, site crews scheduled (with accommodation if necessary), health and safety assessments and other paperwork, any plant or equipment needed and the appropriate vehicles. And, of course, all of that has to co-ordinate with the customer’s schedule as well. When they’re working on a more complex site, such as a nuclear plant or airport, it can take some careful synchronising to bring it all together. Making sure it adds up… Lee Brightmore and the finance team complete all the agreements and support the business from a financial perspective. Their work ensures everything runs smoothly and makes sense for everyone. The business provides a highly flexible system that allows customers to change their contract if they need so it requires a thorough approach and attention to detail, which of course is their strength. Swapping from hire to purchase often makes better financial sense so it’s something that Smart-Space is able to offer at any point within the hire period. For aftercare… the maintenance team, headed by Sam Stokes, makes sure they respond quickly to any customer requests and they also tour the country working with customers who have a maintenance contract, making sure the buildings continue to be fit for purpose. It’s a well-oiled machine! Ultimately, this is a system that works seamlessly and serves the business and its customers very well. You can see how the customer journey utilises the strengths and services of the business – allowing customers to choose the parts of the supply they need. Because of the way it’s set up it means customers can cherry-pick to suit their needs. And that works well for everyone. For the future Smart-Space will continue to develop new instant building products and support the supply of them with a carefully curated service, from start to finish.
