Northern Enterprise Awards 2023

Opened in 2018 by Owners Christine and Steve Parker-Nicholls, Farm Gate Farm Shop started by attending local farmers, artisan, village markets, working from a bespoke converted trailer and building a delivery business. Then, in 2022, the shop opened on the farm. It is a small, family-run shop and free-range butchery located in the Hambleton Hills. Serving both local and national customers, the business offers a variety of fine foods and high welfare free-range and wild meats. Here, we explore the story of Farm Gate Farm Shop and its extensive product ranges. Best Family-Run Farm Shop 2023 - North Yorkshire & Retail Business of the Year 2023 - North Yorkshire Farm Gate Farm Shop On its own farm, Farm Gate Farm Shop produces chicken, pork, and lamb to sell alongside local grass-fed beef and seasonal wild venison, pheasant, and partridge. The shop also supplies a wide range of other local, organic, and artisan produce to complement the array of meats on offer, including over 40 local and British cheeses. In addition, it provides a wide range of pies, pasties, sausage rolls, and ready-tocook foods, made using the shop’s home reared meats. Five years ago, Farm Gate Farm Shop’s story began when Steve and Christine, disillusioned with the commercial farming trade, were inspired to start selling their own free-range meat at local artisan farmer’s markets. With a strong ethos for welfare and quality, they swiftly began attracting customers. Due to increasing demand, the pair were soon able to expand their business, adding other local artisan products to their offerings. Eventually, Farm Gate Farm Shop became the fine foods enterprise it is today, stocking over 700 products. Despite this immense evolution and growth, the business still maintains a strong focus on quality and local artisan products in everything it does and sells. Since the very beginning, Farm Gate Farm Shop has been working to produce and supply sustainable, ecologically sound foods, with a no palm oil policy and a commitment to avoiding single use plastics. By purchasing things locally, the shop not only minimises food miles for the benefit of the environment but also supports businesses in its local community. It is passionate about being able to tell customers exactly where all its products come from. Today, Farm Gate Farm Shop is primarily a team of three: Steve, Christine, and their daughter Rhiannon. On Saturdays, the trio is joined by two young ladies, who help them out during the shop’s busier times. Steve is passionate about taking care of Farm Gate Farm Shop’s stock. He is more than happy to provide customers with specific cuts of meat on request and can give them detailed information about the stock’s welfare. Christine is responsible for making Farm Gate Farm Shop’s pies, pastries, sausage rolls, and scotch eggs. She speaks to customers about how these products are made, sharing with pride that they are crafted from the shop’s own meats and handmade on site. Christine is also responsible for handling the purchase of all other products and has extensive knowledge of the large range of British cheeses. Lastly, Rhiannon develops and updates Farm Gate Farm Shop’s website. She has many new ideas about information that can be posted for customers’ benefit, including details about the level of processing of the shop’s product range. As a keen cook who loves using fresh local ingredients, Rhiannon is currently developing a recipe page as well as a number of recipe boxes, through which she hopes to help customers expand their own cooking skills. Committed to delivering excellence in the commercial farming trade, Steve, Christine, and Rhiannon believe in providing their customers with what they ask for, not what they want to sell based on potential profit margins. The shop strives to listen to its customers’ needs, regularly checking its reviews on sites like Google to develop the business in accordance with their desires. Considering this customer-centric ethos and its genuine focus on producing food sustainably whilst supporting other small local businesses, it is no surprise that Farm Gate Farm Shop has received two titles in the Northern Enterprise Awards: Best Family-Run Farm Shop, North Yorkshire, and Retail Business of the Year, North Yorkshire. The business stands head and shoulders above the rest, delivering unparalleled excellence in all areas.
