Northern Enterprise 2024 / 22 Best Family Tourism Experience 2024 Step into a world of magic at The Potions Cauldron, set against the charming backdrops of York and Edinburgh. Offering bubbling brews and potion-making adventures, the business has become renowned around the world for its outstanding offerings. Following its second consecutive year of recognition in the Northern Enterprise Awards, we take a closer look at the ways in which this enchanting establishment has captured the hearts of the Northern region. Set in the historical heart of York, the Shambles is one of the best preserved medieval streets in the world. With its timber-framed buildings overhanging the winding cobblestoned lane, this narrow maze of iconic architecture serves as a magical environment for the most imaginative minds. In fact, when walking down these stunning streets, friends Ben Fry and Phil Pinder first dreamt up the idea of launching The Potions Cauldron, a wizard-themed immersive experience designed to take guests on a magical journey they won’t soon forget. In 2018, Ben and Phil opened The Potions Cauldron shop in the Shambles, selling a whimsical array of shape-shifting drinks, sweets, bath salts, and various magical memorabilia. Since then, the pair have gone on to establish The Hole in Wand Wizard golf in York, Blackpool, Chester, and Seaham, the Potions Express stand in York’s train station, as well as a secondary location for The Potions Cauldron shop in Edinburgh. Across each of its sites, The Potions Cauldron Group promises an entrancing experience that takes them away from the monotony of their everyday lives and into the wonderful world of wizardry. Its flagship apothecary, found in 9 ¾ Shambles, offers a variety of magical merchandise and potion-making experiences, such as the family-oriented Potions Academy, Wizard Afternoon Tea, and the adult-aimed Poisonous Potions Class. Similarly, its second apothecary, situated on Rose Street in Edinburgh, invites guests to explore the mystical past of Edinburgh, join the fabled Rose Street Covenstead, and sample its enigmatically eclectic drinking potions. The Rose Street Covenstead experience guides guests through to a secret underground room, in which they will learn about Edinburgh’s rich history, and hear the captivating tales of the witch, Morgan Stewart. But that’s not all; the company also operates The Hole in Wand, a nine-hole course that takes mini golf to the next level. Each course has its own tale to tell, with unique riddles and rewards hidden throughout each location, asking guests to discover the unicorn’s secret, take on venomous snakes, hunt down the infamous Grobblenook, or help Helena Cloggsbottom seek out Basilisk’s Blood. What’s more, the forward-thinking group has even gone so far as to establish a warm welcome waiting for its guests upon the moment they take their first step into York. The Potions Express can be found at the Kiosk Under The Stairs at York Train Station, where guests can purchase potions, hot drinks, and magnificently magical gift ideas. Through The Potions Express, the group takes the opportunity to partner with local vendors to sell local produce including Brew York, Dancing Goat Coffee, Fairfax Chocolates, and York Gin. The Potions Cauldron Group is driven by a passion for supporting local communities by introducing magical adventures and unforgettable memories to young people. After successfully establishing numerous locations throughout the North, the company has elected to give back. Through the Grobblenook Foundation, named after its notorious mascot, The Potions Cauldron Group offers vouchers for fundraising raffles, with plans to add more to its offerings very soon. In doing so, the group is able to give back to the communities that have supported its rise to success over the years and leave a legacy that is not only steeped in magic and whimsy, but also in altruism and social responsibility. Since its inception, the group has been focused on injecting magic and marvel into select locations throughout the North, and as a result has cemented itself to be a trusted provider of exceptionally unique experiences, so much so that The Potions Cauldron Group has been named the Best Family Tourism Experience 2024. For its outstanding offerings, the group has gained many glowing reviews left by clients who cannot wait to return. “Lovely shop, great quality products, and amazing staff,” reports Adam. “The potions experience was brilliant, and the alchemist made it a wonderful time.
