Northern Enterprise Awards 2025

Working closely with businesses from across the food and hospitality industries – as well as the likes of local authorities, the NHS, education settings, nursing homes, churches, and charities – Cocoms’ client base is so diverse that it can serve Michelin-star restaurants, large hotel chains, and individuals looking to gain an industry qualification all within the same day. This ability starts with all of the safety/compliance and e-learning courses it offers being accredited by the CPD certification service, the gold standard for UK training. However, what really sets Cocoms apart in this arena is that all of the e-learning courses it provides are freely accessible to all of its users, differentiating itself from its competitors and the payment walls they put their courses behind. Offering these courses for free is in no way a reflection of inferior quality. In fact, it is quite the opposite. Cocoms’ superiority in this space can be seen through it having developed the first level training for food handlers to be funded by the European Commission in partnership with FERCO (Europe’s industry trade body for contract catering services). Much of Cocoms’ prowess in this environment stems from John himself, who is the man at the helm of this family-run microbusiness. As one of the industry’s leading compliance experts, John has spent more than 20 years working in hospitality environments, advising on regulatory compliance systems for companies ranging from Forte and Gardner Merchant to Sodexo. From 2002 to 2015, John was also the British Hospitality Association’s Food & Technical Affairs Advisor. Following this appointment, John also sat on a range of committees, from the Food Standards Agencies Steering Group on the National Food Hygiene Rating Scheme to the Department of Health Responsibility Deal, the Food and Behaviour Change Networks, and the HSE Hospitality Liaison Forum. With such a background to boot, it is no surprise that John has guided Cocoms in its delivery of compliance systems to a multitude of hospitality, single-outlet, and multi-site hospitality businesses based across the North of England. Innovation has been a constant marker of Cocoms’ work, seen through it having introduced new temperature recording/reporting software, first adopted by the Ed’s Easy Diner Group across its UK locations. Andrew Guy, The Group’s Chief Executive, said of his relationship with Cocoms: “Ed’s Easy Diner Group has been using the Cocoms training and compliance systems for a number of years. Recently, Cocoms has been helping us establish our Primary Authority relationship with Westminster City Council. We are delighted to be the first company to use the new software, which we are rolling out to all our diners.” This barely scratches the surface when it comes to the full range of provisions offered by Cocoms, whose services in the field of hospitality compliance also include staff training (even for new starters and temporary workers hired throughout the year), access to a regularly updated system of training and insights, a renewable license after the first year, and the delivery of encompassing technical support via a dedicated online consultant. All of this adds up to make Cocoms the ultimate safety partner for those in this space, especially given that the hospitality industry is continuously diversifying. With the nearby Bradford also being named the 2025 City of Culture, the company’s position in the North remains stronger than ever – and the relationships it has built with clients in this region are continuing to see them both through the trials and tribulations of this landscape. Lastly, touching on the future plans for Cocoms as we enter into the final week of 2025, John told us: “We will continue to develop our training packages and will be launching an allergy awareness training package in 2026.” This initiative represents a company at the top of its game, and is our pleasure to recognise Cocoms Ltd as such by bestowing two awards upon it as part of this programme.
