Firstly, what would you say are the key components to your success? At Owen James Events we have built our success on building and nurturing communities, and delivering sustained campaigns for them – either at an industry, business or individual level. Our mission is to deliver sustainable, diverse, world-class research and events for the financial sector. Where key decision makers can connect, be inspired and together, influence the change. We’d love to know, what are your favourite parts of your work? The people and personalities across the different communities we serve. We are a people-first business and financial services is a brilliant industry full of fascinating individuals. I am blessed to be able to rub shoulders (and raise a glass) with so many great minds. Working in financial services, whilst we could turn our hand to other industries, is a thriving sector full of opportunity. No part of the industry is the same – from the private banks to mortgage brokers, to financial advisers to asset managers - the challenges they are facing are constantly evolving which keeps us on our toes. Having purpose, I love making change happen. Whether it is; encouraging more giving to charity and philanthropy, building a collective voice to lobby, helping the industry benchmark productivity, encouraging firms to break into a market or launch new products and/or simply helping someone find a new job. Hearing from some of the best minds in the world at our events, honestly, we have heard from some of the most inspiring, provocative speakers which can be quite humbling. A point of time to celebrate, one of the joys of doing events is that for each event you are working towards an end point and you get to celebrate in style with the team and clients when you knock it out of the park. How has your career progressed, and how has your life experience influenced your role with Owen James Events? 25 years ago (gulp, I must be getting old) after spending a hedonistic year traveling around Africa, I decided to help a friend out while I looked for a job as a management consultant. It was for a company called Richmond Events who brought together different industries on a cruise ships and set them loose at sea for three days. I had the best fun, met the best people (even my wife) and before I knew it seven years had flown by. Whilst on the ships, I worked on an event called PIMS that brought together the top IFAs from across the UK. Having got to know this industry me and a business partner, who is now enjoying retirement, decided that we wanted to try something new. So, with one laptop between us we decided to create ‘A Meeting of Minds’ for the financial services industry and here I am today. In terms of what has got me here today I would say it is my tenacity, as well as, my love of building relationships and connecting people. I am a people pleaser. What do you find is the most captivating part of how the Owen James Events team works? Whilst we are a relatively a small team, I am blessed that we have such a diverse and talented team. Everyone brings something different to the party and plays an integral part in the success of Owen James Events. I am strong believer of transparency and leading by example. I like to keep moral up, energy levels high and an eye on the bigger picture is super important. Ultimately, I want to see people within the business grow and realise their potential. James brings people together, prioritises a collaborative and fun atmosphere, and always acts with integrity and respect for both his team and his clients. It was great to hear from James directly and we wish him all the best for the years to come – especially as he has plans to drive productivity, respond to the impact of AI on business and, of course, continue to keep the team spirit high!
