27 | Scottish Enterprise Awards 2022 Best UK-Wide Museum & Heritage Fit-Out Specialists 2022 The Elmwood Projects story stems back to 1972 when now-retired Managing Director Alan Strachan’s father, a time-served joiner, decided to take the plunge and establish a joinery manufacturing company, with a focus and commitment towards personal service and superior snag-free finish. Ever since then, client-centricity has remained at the heart of its culture, and as its client base has grown, so has its team, with it now employing in excess of 60 dedicated individuals. After a move to a bespoke 20,000sqft manufacturing facility in 2003 and the addition of a dedicated museum and heritage division, Elmwood has been able to offer a range of complementary services that can be commissioned individually or together for a comprehensive solution. Many of its clients return time and time again for projects in the form of permanent and temporary museum exhibition and gallery fit-outs, visitor experiences, heritage projects, commercial fit-outs, and specialist joinery packages. Many of Elmwood’s projects are UK-wide, so, being based in central Scotland, its team are able to provide their services from the isles of Scotland to the south coast of England. Additionally, they are able to utilise bespoke trades and partnerships not only in Scotland, but nationwide. Project Director, Steven Gough says, “We are working constantly with leading-edge design teams nationwide, pushing the boundaries, and nothing we do follows any trend as all contracts tend to be bespoke in nature.” A large portion of Elmwood’s staff and operatives are long-serving and many have been promoted through the ranks, for example, joiners to project managers. They are known for going the extra mile to get the job done, and underpinning each and every service delivered are the same family values that the company was built upon. Elmwood also supports the SBEF Apprenticeship Scheme and has an intake of at least three apprentices per year with a view to moving them forward within the company. When it comes to recruiting new talent, it has the benefit of displaying a portfolio of a wide range of highend contracts. Now, Elmwood is pleased that its workload shows a 20% increase in turnover for the year ending June 2023, and this includes museum and heritage projects such as visitor centres within the whiskey industry. It has also secured around 15% of its projected turnover for the year ending June 2024.
