It started as a small dream with a big heart and is growing exponentially as it improves the lives of children everywhere with its educational tales of magic and mystery. Here we speak to Owner David Salariya about this excellent publishing company Founded in 1989 by illustrator David Salariya, The Salariya Book Company is operated by married couple, David and Shirley Salariya. David tells us that they originally ran the book company out of their home in Brighton that acted as their office. The owners have a heart-warming view of the power of books and have dedicated a lot of time to the publishing of good quality content for children all over the world. David says, “We believe that books, and the stories and ideas they hold, have the unique capacity to connect us, inform us, and move us toward a better future. We create and publish the very best books for children, books that children will want to come back to.” “Being small, independent and flexible, we are able to adapt projects/move schedules to fit with our customers’ needs, such as doing specific titles for foreign clients or partnering with organisations like the Historic Royal Palaces and the Mary Rose Trust. We’re accessible, friendly and helpful,” David explains. By being so approachable and inclusive, Salariya is able to reach a wider audience. The company is well known for its creative design and captivating publications that are all child-focused stories of adventure, marvel, and curiosity that keep children – and parents – coming back for more. Its unique selling point (USP) is its ability to educate as well as enthral and charm the reader. David explains, “Our Imprints – Book House, Scribblers and Scribo – were lists comprising of children’s nonfiction, early learning books, board books, picture books and children’s fiction in print and digital formats.” David lets us know that throughout 2021, these imprints were phased out and joined as one to form Salariya. Another USP is that it does everything it can to make a difference to people on a global level, from foreign publishers to agents. It is important that they “feel confident that we’ll be working on something that matches their programme,” adds David. Best Children’s Book Publisher 2021 Working at book fairs and sharing the charm of each story Salariya creates engrossing and appealing content that contain intricate, experienced, and outstanding illustrations and design that really showcase the pieces. David shares, “Many of The Salariya Book Company’s children’s books are designed and created in-house. This allows us to have complete creative control, and we spend a great deal of time, care and attention creating innovative, accessible books for our readers. Children are at the centre of everything we do, and as a company we are consistently looking for new ways to engage children with books and with reading.” The internal culture of the company is to create the most compelling and inspiring content for children everywhere. It is always looking for new ways to create a relationship between the child and their education, in a way that is both fun and fascinating. By spending so much energy on what they know will work for the audience that they have in mind Salariya produces top-quality content that will make a huge impact on the reader. As the last 18 months have been very difficult for a plethora of businesses across many industries it is no surprise that Salariya has felt the tension in such trying times. However, it has prevailed and propelled itself forward in the industry only to find strength in its team’s close-knit, creative nature. As David comments on the outcomes of the global pandemic, he says, “The isolation necessitated by the pandemic has reminded us of the importance and value of collaboration, whether with publishers abroad – such as Sterling and Scholastic in the USA – in order to bring our books to an international readership, or with institutions such as museums and literary festivals in order to find new avenues to get our products in front of customers.” This is something that Salariya can carry into the future as it continues to aid children “to imagine a more equitable, diverse and sustainable world Sep21900
