Southern Enterprise Awards 2024

SME News Southern Enterprise Awards 2024/ 38 Dog Training Facility of the Year 2024 - Devon All dogs have the capacity to be loving, obedient, and loyal. Unfortunately, due to poor training and mistreatment, many have gained a bad reputation for misbehaving. With the appropriate training and care, however, all dogs can thrive in their forever homes. Here, we take a look at Jaws Paws & Claws, a leading dog training facility on a mission to prove this very statement. As the facility wins its title in the Southern Enterprise Awards 2024, we speak with its Owner, Ross Braund-Phillips. Based in Bucks Cross, Jaws Paws & Claws offers its clients a range of training services, catering to dogs of all ages. With extensive experience in all sorts of canine behaviours, the facility can cover all stages of teaching, from general training to correcting aggression. In addition to this, Jaws Paws & Claws works alongside small and local businesses geared towards dog care, from dog accessories to four-star boarding kennels, such as the Dog Lounge in Buckland Brewer. “Our aim is that all dogs are trainable,” says Ross, “working through their issues to improve or manage their behaviour, as well as making a large family network to improve people’s knowledge with fun along the way, as having a dog is meant to be a joy and not always a chore or stress.” In addition to top-tier training services, Jaws Paws & Claws also offers agility and other sports for its clients. Such offerings combine fun with exercise, enabling the dogs to release pent up energy, further ensuring better behaviour at home. This also allows owners to develop deeper bonds with their pets, and even learn to compete in shows. Jaws Paws & Claws provides a large variety of training and events for pet owners, even offering one-to-one lessons and outdoor training, which allows owners to address behavioural issues in a real environment for authentic corrective experiences. Ross also brings his own dogs into the venue to work alongside dogs that require a slower approach to creating new behaviours. These offerings enable Jaws Paws & Claws to stand out in a competitive market, where many facilities are only offering the basic training courses. “We treat our students how we would want to be treated,” says Ross. “We listen to the owners and watch where they think they are going wrong and ask why they think their way is the right way. No dog is the same, so we work with the individual dog and the owner.” This approach is crucial in the current climate, where more dogs are forming reactive behaviours due to overbreeding and selling as a direct result of COVID-19. The UK recorded a sharp rise in puppy purchasing, as many first-time dog owners purchased puppies in response to the increasing loneliness throughout the pandemic. This increase caused a spike in breeding, with many inexperienced individuals opting to try their hand at the trend. Unfortunately, this has caused a rise in dogs with aggressive or reactive behaviour due to improper training being provided at the puppy stage. In providing training that has been tailored to each pet and their owner, Jaws Paws & Claws is assisting in mitigating this rising issue. This effort not only helps inexperienced pet owners with understanding the correct techniques, but it also aids in reducing the stigma surrounding certain breeds as the reactive behaviour is corrected. As for the future, Jaws Paws & Claws has an exciting year ahead. Ross tells us that the facility aims to continue providing top-notch training services to improve the behaviours and lives of its clients and their precious puppies. “As well as training, I show and compete in breed shows and dog sports,” he tells us. “I would like to work with more local kennels and vets and do more training camps and conferences.” With such big plans ahead, Jaws Paws & Claws is poised to have a year of prosperity and great success. Through its individualised approach and excellent offerings, the facility has established itself as a leading provider of dog training and agility services. It is for this very reason that Jaws Paws & Claws has been recognised as the Dog Training Facility of the Year 2024 – Devon.
