Beginning his career in this space by working on the railway itself, John Morgan started out as a shunter, before working his way up to roles including signalman, station manager, and rail incident officer. After being made redundant, John made the decision to create J. Morgan Consulting, where he could leverage his knowledge to support others working in this environment. Today, John’s firm has more than 25 years as a HSQE consultant under its belt, with expertise that goes beyond rail to also cover construction and medical. Across his career, John had worked for several big-name train companies, as well as on major projects for the likes of Betchel, the SRA, and Delatim. Highlights across this expansive portfolio include supporting the Bedford Cauldwell Depot, Thameslink 2000 (the original Thameslink), and the London Underground. Outside of the rail industry, John has also lent his expertise to IT and telecom-based projects for airports, including Heathrow Terminal 2, particularly during the major refresh it went through in mid-2014. Thanks to his diverse experience, J. Morgan Consulting today boasts clients from across the rail industry and beyond, including big names such as Network Rail and G & W Marine. John’s mission with all of these companies is the same: to help to maintain their certifications by ensuring they are compliant with industry standards and legislation alike. This includes ISOs 9001, 14001, and 4500. John also offers support by carrying out site inspections, providing detailed feedback on changes clients can make to boost compliance. Supporting John on this quest is his well-liked proprietary management system, which is broken down into 14 intuitive sections rather than being just one 80-page long policy. John told us: “My system allows anyone to find a policy, procedure, or form in about three moves, and it covers all of these areas they need, including HR, health, and site work, to name a few.” This complete system also includes access to relevant forms, databases, and templates, with full training offered alongside detailed assistance on audit day. Moreover, if a client already has a management system in place, John can help to review and update it to see that it meets their changing needs. On the flip side, if a client is new to rail, J. Morgan Consulting sees they are guided through the stressful process of getting everything ready they need for success. This applies to one-man bands, large corporations, and everything in between. Having helped more than 200 such clients over the last 8 years or so, the firm is incredibly proud of its hard-earned 100% success rate. Outside of more traditional health and safety-related channels, J. Morgan Consulting delivers an expansive range of occupational health services, including voluntary, fully confidential lifestyle and wellbeing assessments from its clinic. More detailed health checks are also available, whereby an employee will receive everything from urine analysis and heart checks through to tests relating to their cholesterol level and risk of metabolic syndrome. John also promotes the RSSB Wellness Campaign across the sites he frequents. Since J. Morgan Consulting’s aforementioned clinic is approved by the Railway Industry Supplier Qualification Scheme (RISQS), clients can rest easy knowing that samples will be collected by trained officers who will follow a full chain of custody protocol down to the letter. This is the case across its periodic, random, pre-employment, and pre-sponsorship workplace screenings, where the likes of drug and alcohol tests are performed. As he looks to the future of this award-winning operation, John told us of plans to take on companies in need of support with ISO 27000, which is all about information security management. When this comes to fruition, it will further demonstrate the commitment that John – and J. Morgan Consulting Ltd – has to serving its clients’ every need. It is this very dedication that has led to it featuring in our 2025 Southern Enterprise Awards. Contact: John Morgan Company: J.
