UK Enterprise Awards 2018
32 SME NEWS / UK Enterprise Awards 2018 , JT Group Limited is a full-service global consumer and business enterprise provider headquartered in the Channel Islands. We profile this innovative company to find out more and explore the secrets behind its success. Best Communication Solutions Company - The Channel Islands Since its establishment in 1895 JT has flourished, and today the group employs over 600 staff across 11 global locations, providing products and services to over 1.4 million global consumer subscribers and 2,200 active business customers. This vast international presence helps JT to achieve its vision: to become the partner of choice for global telecommunications innovation. The firm has worked hard to build long-standing partnerships with leading communications businesses to deliver the products and services expected from a full-service telecoms operator. Notably, JT holds Avaya Platinum Partner Status, is a member of Dimension Data’s One Cloud Alliance and is a certified Cisco ‘Advanced Collaboration Architecture Specialist’ Service Provider. Over recent years JT has invested heavily in a resilient network to connect the Channel Islands internationally and support their place on the global business stage. In 2018, its award-winning full-fibre network programme will be completed, which will see Jersey become the first jurisdiction in the world to reach 100% full-fibre connectivity. With the delivery of an Advanced 4G mobile network in Jersey and Guernsey, JT is ensuring that the Channel Islands are one of the most seamlessly connected places in the world. It is widely recognised that JT’s data-hosting facilities are the most comprehensive, accredited and secure in the Channel Islands, supporting international eGaming and finance industries. JT’s data-centres are SOC- certified, comply with the European standard ISO27001 and meet the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI-DSS). Choosing to replace a copper network with a full-fibre one was the most difficult choice available to JT when it began its ‘Gigabit’ project in 2012; however, it was the right one, putting the needs of customers and community first. It also meant JT started the journey of rolling out the network years in advance of the point at which it would be required. JT has laid over 3,000 km of individual fibre-optic cable to more than 30,000 homes and almost 5,000 businesses. With close to 100% of properties already connected to full-fibre, Jersey now has the highest Fibre-to-the-Home (FTTH) penetration in the world, sitting above the UAE (94.3%), Qatar (90.4%) and Singapore (90.3%). Despite the challenges that JT faced in creating this innovative infrastructure, the benefits of a full-fibre network are unlimited, and JT has already released a number of innovative products that run off fibre. These include JT Cloud PBX, an IP-based business telephony service and JT Fon, a community network, providing the ability to move effortlessly from one Wi-Fi hotspot to another, among many others. To further enhance its service offering, JT is also developing IoT technology built on the capacity, speed, reliability and scalability of its full-fibre network. Sony has recently chosen Jersey to test its LPWAN technology because of the island’s telecoms infrastructure and JT, in partnership with Digital Jersey (a government- funded body charged with developing the island’s digital sector), is building a dedicated IoT Lab. This will offer companies the opportunity to collaborate on innovative product development, share resources and turn ideas into commercial ventures. From a consumer perspective, households in Jersey now have an average of 15 devices directly connected to the internet and some have more than 150 separate devices connected to a single wireless router. This trend is expected to increase in light of automatic communications between devices and further integration into daily life. With full- fibre, technology enters the realm of the possible, with the growing influence of the Internet of Things (IoT), fintech, cloud computing, artificial intelligence, chatbots and blockchain – which are all predicted to have a profound impact on our key industries. Currently, JT Fibre Broadband customers enjoy the fastest standard data download speeds in the world (250 Mb/s) and a minimum upload speed of 50 Mb/s. The country with the second fastest download speed is Singapore, with an average of 161.53 Mb/s. The plan over subsequent years is to increase the standard speeds to 1 Gb/s, which will continue to keep Jersey as the leading island for digital innovation. Ultimately, becoming the world’s first full-fibre jurisdiction has had its challenges, but thanks to the work of an incredibly dedicated and resourceful team, JT has risen to it. Jersey now has laid one of the key foundations for many years of prosperity and the team at JT are immensely proud of this achievement and keen to build upon this success over the years to come.
