UK Enterprise Awards 2019

22 | SME NEWS - UK Enterprise Awards 2019 Apr19305 Based in Stockport, the Hope Inn is a free house pub featuring a four- barrel micro-brewery in the basement. As part of our overview of a selection of the winners from this year’s UK Enterprise Awards we profile the establishment and share an insight into the secrets behind its success. Best Traditional Pub 2019 - Greater Manchester Incorporating two unique businesses, The Hope Inn offers exceptional service under this name, with its brewery goes under the name Fool Hardy Ales. The pub is owned solely by Martin Wood and as such is completely free of tie to any big breweries or pub chains. As a result, the pub can sell whatever products it sees fit, with Fool Hardy being unique to this pub. A big part of the pub’s popularity is its cask ales, with 11 always available with six brewed on site. The Hope Inn also boasts craft keg, traditional cider, Czech lager and Belgium and American draught beers, plus a large range of world bottle beers, specialist gins, vodkas, spirits and wines. Thanks to this wide range of drinks, the Hope Inn is able to welcome very diverse customer base ranging from 18 to 80, all of whom receive the exceptional service and warm welcome they deserve. Fool Hardy Ales is a key draw for many clients, who come from far and wide to sample these unique beers. The inn’s best seller Risky blond a 4.4% session pale ale by far outsells any other product on the bar. The branding for Fool Hardy is unique as it is all done inhouse again by me, so the logo, pump clips, drip mats, and adverts are all original instead of done by some big national design agency. Seeking to offer guests a unique drinking experience, the Hope Inn does not incorporate any gambling machines, jukeboxes or televisions. As such, guests have to rely on the beer and conversation, making this a good old-fashioned ale house whose essence has all but been lost in modern society. This innovative drinking experience attracts clients who are tired of the noise, distraction and bright lights of modern pubs and choose instead to lose themselves in a traditional ale house. Looking ahead, the Hope Inn and Fool Hardy Ales will remain committed to creating and providing exceptional ale in a warm, welcoming setting.
