UK Enterprise Awards 2019
6 | SME NEWS - UK Enterprise Awards 2019 From its base in the heart of the Surrey countryside, Cranleigh School provides winning co-educational boarding and day education to pupils aged 13-18 years old. We profile the school to find out more about how it works to shape its pupils into model members of society and prepare them for life in the modern workplace. Cranleigh School: Best Independent School 2019 - South East England Originally established community school in 1865 for the sons of local farmers, Cranleigh has flourished over the years into an international group of co-educational schools. True to its founding ethos, and its motto (Ex Cultu Robur, from culture comes strength), Cranleigh’s aim remains to teach the child ‘in the whole’. The boarding structure provides a wealth of opportunities, and a culture whereby each individual child is valued and will flourish; where each child has the time, and support, to discover their own talents and passions, whatever they may be. Set in 280 acres of beautiful Surrey countryside, Cranleigh is a vibrant co-educational boarding school that uniquely combines the diverse opportunities of a large organisation with the individual support and encouragement of a smaller establishment. Building upon its long legacy of excellence in the provision of education, Cranleigh’s profile has risen dramatically in recent years. Over the last year the school has enjoyed the most successful results in its 150-year history, both academically and across an impressive range of sports, arts and cultural activities. The 2018 GCSE results put Cranleigh at the top of the independently assessed CEM league table for the independent school that provided pupils with the most value-added in the country. Across all subjects an average of 0.62 added on to predicted exam grades, a direct result of the time and care invested by academic staff and the extra clinics held. Alongside its academic successes, the school has also achieved phenomenal results in the sporting arena. In recent years Cranleigh’s hockey teams in various age groups have been national indoor and outdoor champions, the Rugby 7’s team has scooped national competitions and the Cricket team is rated number one in the country by Wisden. Individual players represent their national side in Netball, Cross Country, Bouldering, Wheelchair Tennis, Hockey and Riding. Pupils also perform at the highest level in classical and contemporary Music, Drama and Art. Such success is remarkable in such a small school, with 650 pupils. It is built upon the school’s dedication to supporting pupils and their families throughout their academic lives and beyond. Cranleigh is a small and friendly co-educational school, with a high staff-to-pupil ratio, so that everyone knows one another. Academic staff also coach sports teams, so that pupils get to know them in and out of the classroom. As part of this focus on supporting pupils and offering them a space where they can truly be themselves, at Cranleigh pastoral care is second to none and boarding is a nurturing environment where children grow with confidence. It also allows Cranleigh to cater for bespoke elite sports programmes for nationally performing pupils, and ensures that all pupils play for the love of the shirt. Pupils with a special interest in a particular field have access to staff across all departments and for all activities.
