UK Enterprise 2020

107 | UK Enterprise Awards 2020 As businesses across all sectors and industries are making the necessary adjustments to becoming more environmentally friendly, Legasea, an environmental oil and gas service company focused on the Circular Economy, is taking the lead in its promotion of sustainability and reuse. As it achieves the Subsea Company of the Year 2020 Award, we looked beneath the surface to find out a bit more about this exciting young company. SME UK Enterprise Awards 2020 & Subsea Company of the Year 2020: Legasea Since its incorporation in December 2018, Aberdeenshire-based start-up Legasea has grown from a concept into a fast-growing business, that is leading the oil and gas sector in how it manages waste. Having recognised that a linear system is no longer a viable or sustainable option, Legasea utilises a circular economy system, which sees one company’s waste being refurbished and reused elsewhere. Specialising in production systems and controls, and offering a range of electrical, hydraulic and mechanical engineering systems, Legasea operates across a wide range of markets, including subsea oil and gas production, drilling, topsides, and renewables. The company’s key objective is to act in a sustainable manner, and their overall strategy is to provide a ‘shore to store’ service to the oil and gas industry, taking subsea equipment that is no longer required, and finding routes to refurbish, recertify, remanufacture and reuse it, keeping as many components as possible in use. Excess subsea equipment is typically produced to be held as a contingency backup, and it is then routinely scrapped, without being used, due to of the bespoke nature of the equipment. However, Legasea recognises the value of the component parts of these assemblies. Repurposing them is both a cost-effective and environmentally friendly solution which is conducive to the circular ethos that they are promoting within the oil and gas industry. Their team of experienced colleagues work together, each contributing their expertise to ensure that each project is carried out successfully and as sustainably as possible. Legasea makes the system of reusing easy, allowing clients to align their attitudes to their Corporate Social Responsibility and government and industry strategies without battling through lengthy and costly procedures. Despite being such a young company, the impact made by Legasea has been positive and significant. As a welcome and refreshing change to the norm, Legasea is earning notable clients that include major international oil and gas operators, UK North Sea operators, oilfield service providers and renewable energy companies. It has built itself a loyal client base, many of whom have placed repeat orders, and worked with the organisation to put the company on approved vendor lists. The reception to the company has been unprecedented, and all those who visit the facility come away with only positive feedback. As part of their efforts to revolutionise waste management within the energy sector, Legasea is determined to raise awareness of the circular economy in both the local and wider community, and not just within subsea or energy sectors. Legasea works closely with Wood RecyclAbility, a non-profit social enterprise that provides practical work experience for people with additional support needs through working with waste wood. The beautiful and unique furniture in the Legasea office is supplied by RecyclAbility, whilst in return the team at Legasea repairs RecyclAbility’s skips, which are provided to local companies to collect waste wood for reuse. Jul20183 Like many start-ups, Legasea’s initial revenue was moderate. However, despite having no marketing experience prior to its establishment, the organisation has developed quickly, and as their base of loyal clients increases, their revenue does too. Although Legasea felt the detrimental effects of the pandemic that most businesses across the UK did, they have managed to adapt and prepare for future growth. Over the next year, they intend to grow their team and expand into international markets, whilst continuing to stay true to their core mission; to operate in a safe and environmentally conscious manner, while continuing to raise awareness of the circular economy.
