UK Enterprise 2020
139 | UK Enterprise Awards 2020 Jul20195 Energy Efficiency Experts of the Year 2020 Murton & Co are the go-to experts for energy efficiency, helping customers achieve compliance, comfort and cost savings on commercial and domestic properties, whether they be existing or new-build properties. Their offering and expertise have evolved in recent years to have an increased focus on climate issues, decarbonising the built environment and improving wellbeing in homes and business premises. This Lancaster-based company is breaking out from its competitors as it seeks to make the energy industry more sustainable both economically and environmentally. Murton & Co specialises in energy efficiency and compliance for building performance in the design, construction and operation of property assets to improve comfort, environmental resilience and investment growth. Whilst Murton & Co is regulated by the RICS, the services they deliver are not traditionally those which a Chartered Surveyor would undertake. Their services include analysis of the energy performance of existing buildings, evaluating new-build projects for compliance with building regulations, strategic asset management, measured surveys and condition surveys. The team work closely with a range of clients, whether they be architects, investors, landlords, home-owners or local authorities to ensure every building is compliant with building regulations and minimum EPC Standards. Operating in Lancaster and offering over twenty years of experience, professionalism is at the heart of the organisation. Their core values of Integrity, Collaboration, Care and Innovation centre around Murton & Co’s commitment to put service before profit. Being able to tackle complex issues with solutions that respect the client’s needs for energy performance, sustainability and compliance is what separates Murton & Co from its competitors. Extensive knowledge and understanding of the regulations surrounding building and energy assessments not only guarantees the best service for customers, but has equipped Jonny Murton, MD of Murton & Co, to deliver CPD seminars on the subject. Having been commissioned by the RICS to deliver seminars throughout the Northwest and Isle of Man, Jonny has also been commissioned to act as an Expert Witness on several cases relating to Energy Performance Certificates. The bespoke in-house training offered by Murton & Co not only allows the team to constantly learn and develop, but share their expertise and deliver vocational qualifications. The company was also commissioned by City & Guilds to redevelop their suite of Energy Assessment qualifications over a five-year period, and these qualifications remain in use today. Murton & Co developed and delivered training courses to over 200 aspiring Energy Assessors and have continued to support them after the completion of their training. The company has recently begun recruiting for an Energy Assessor and Retrofit Coordinator, an exciting development for the next phase of business growth. This not only demonstrates the confidence that Jonny and Caroline have in the future of their business but also in their market. Whilst technical qualifications and skill are valuable assets, attitude and enthusiasm are vital and Murton & Co actively encourages and supports staff training to develop knowledge, confidence and personality, so their employees can in turn make a positive impact in the world. The company has not suffered too much as result of the recent pandemic, they have witnessed significant changes within the property market, particularly in retail and office spaces. The predominant outcome has been a shift in attitudes towards energy efficiency. The launch of a new standard – PAS2035 – which creates a requirement for energy efficiency improvement works to be carried out in a holistic manner with proper evaluation, coordination and management of the works. The standard will be a requirement for any projects that are funded by public money. However, it will not be a requirement under the new Green Home Grant, due to be launched at the end of September 2020 as part of the government’s efforts to boost the economy through the property market. The Grant is primarily designed to fund energy efficiency improvement measures for low income households. Murton & Co is ready for these changes and are in a strong position to continue making a positive impact in the property market. Predicting an increased demand for high quality, affordable housing with more climate resilience, and considerable changes in the high street, Murton & Co has developed two packaged service offerings - one specifically for landlords that will bring about a more consistent and robust approach for managing a portfolio and one to support homeowners looking to improve the energy efficiency of their property. These packaged services incorporate their seven-step methodology to guarantee the results will meet the client’s goal. As the property market evolves, there is no doubt that this ambitious, family run business will be leading the way in providing innovative solutions for each and every one of its happy customers.
