Trying to cope with the loss of a loved one is a painful experience and many people are often left feeling sad, lonely, helpless, confused and angry. After working for a number of Funeral Directors, Peter Dodd established his own business in Grindon in 1982. A second funeral home soon followed with the opening of a branch in Roker however, after many years of caring for the public, Peter sadly passed away whilst on holiday in Spain. Since the passing of Peter, the business has continued to grow with the opening of a third funeral home in Hylton Castle. With a wealth of knowledge and expertise to call upon, the firm is able to offer its clients floral tributes, headstones, funeral transport, bespoke funeral stationery and a national pre-paid range of funeral plans through Golden Charter. Aside from its involvement in the funeral industry, the firm often raises money for many good causes and sponsors local sports organisations. In honour of Peter, the firm continues to lead the funeral industry by focusing on its client service, as current owner, David Gardener points out. “From the moment a family contacts us, through to the day of the funeral and beyond, we maintain a professional and high level of care and support for families and their loved ones. The impact of COVID-19 on the funeral industry has been horrendous with restrictions limiting the number of attendees, and the government guidelines surrounding face coverings and social distancing worsening the experience at a time when families and friends need comfort. However, throughout a difficult period, the firm has still maintained a high level of service, as David confirms. “By implementing COVID guidelines, we have made all our branches and funeral vehicles safe. Additionally, where necessary, we have provided screens and adequate PPE for all families and our staff”. Finally, David discusses the future outlook of the funeral industry as we look ahead to the remainder of 2021 and beyond. “With COVID-19 easing we can slowly return to a more normal life and ensure families can comfort one another again”.
