We speak to founder, Wayne Jones, about what the firm can offer in the wake of it being crowned Best Health & Safety Consultancy Firm 2021. Taking the complexity out of compliance is what Salus Services Ltd (Salus) specialises in. Based in Wales, with offices in Wrexham and Porthmadog, Salus was founded in 2006 by Wayne Jones to provide cost effective professional health and safety advice to SMEs and small contractors who would otherwise not have access to an expert in health and safety. Salus has grown to be a network-based health, safety, environmental and management consultancy and supports numerous clients across the UK and Ireland in a variety of industries and locations. “Our extensive experience in the field of health, safety and environmental management means we’ve seen the problems you face as a busy business owner,” says Wayne, speaking of the rationale behind Salus’s inception. “However, our local presence approach allows for a responsive service and our tech-forward approach contributes to how easy we are to work with.” The company’s name was initially meant to derive from the Welsh language, however there were no business cards big enough back then to put a Welsh translated health and safety word on! But, not being one to give up, Wayne hit upon a name derived from the Latin word for “safety”, “health” and “wellbeing” – salus! “Salus was a Roman goddess,” he explains. “She was the goddess of safety and wellbeing (welfare, health and prosperity) of both the individual and the state and was one of the most ancient Roman goddesses.” As the founder of Salus, Wayne has not only invested money and time into growing the firm into one of the best health and safety consultancies in the UK, but he has also invested in his family. His daughter, Alice, started in the business as an office administrator but now runs the business alongside her father! “She soon got the ‘health and safety bug’ and commenced her studies on the NEBOSH trail,” he enthuses. “After successfully passing the NEBOSH Certificate and Diploma courses and exams, Alice is on track to be a Chartered Health & Safety Professional before her 24th birthday – the youngest person ever to achieve this!” The dedicated team of health and safety consultants at Salus provide a range of health, safety, environmental and training services to ensure that clients are fully compliant and remain so. This is achieved by using a three-stage, step-by-step process which consists of initially listening to a clients’ concerns, either over the phone or in a meeting; conducting an in-depth business review and recommending solutions; and implementing said solutions to ensure that customers have complete peace of mind and are fully compliant. “The experience and knowledge we’ve attained has helped many contractors and companies become more health and safety compliant and aware,” Wayne states. “Our practical advice and range of solutions helps them retain their contracts and acquire new contracts as well.” As the firm celebrates success this year at the SME UK Enterprise Awards, Wayne is able to look to the future of Salus with great optimism as he, Alice and his team continue to strive towards the best in health and safety consultancy in the UK.
