145 | UK Enterprise Awards 2022 Chameleon School of Construction (Chameleon) is a recognised training provider delivering courses up to Level 3 in bricklaying, plastering, tiling, and motor vehicle for individuals of all ages and abilities. In light of its extraordinary success in the UK Enterprise Awards for the third consecutive year, we take a look at how the Chameleon team continues to have a positive impact on the lives of learners in Swadlincote, Burton-on-Trent, Barlborough, Staveley, Ripley, Pinxton, and surrounding areas. Husband and wife team, Angelica and Jason Duncan founded Chameleon School of Construction in 2011 when Angelica found there weren’t any local construction training facilities available. Thus, they sought out to create a centre of excellence that works hard to accommodate people from all walks of life, from youngsters who need a confidence boost, to school leavers who are in need of a training facility that offers small class sizes. The centres also offer funded courses for unemployed individuals of all ages who are seeking a change of career direction, as well as construction professionals who are looking to enhance their skills. Chameleon never turns anybody away, believing that all individuals deserve an opportunity, regardless of their background or lack of academic qualifications. Its team does not judge prospective learners on their lack of academic ability. Instead, they seek to equip all learners with the skills and knowledge needed to carve out a bright future for themselves. This delivery is paired with pastoral care as learners are helped to gain newfound confidence within themselves. Most importantly, learners are treated as individuals rather than a number in a group. The training provider has also seen an influx of learners who are looking to train in a new trade due to being forced out of their initial chosen careers. As a result, it has installed mezzanine floors in some of its units to increase capacity of those it can train, giving many individuals another chance at success. Chameleon is different to other colleges and large training providers in that it is small enough to deliver an excellent standard of service and Jun22739 Best Construction Training Provider 2022 - Midlands personal level of attention, combined with the flexibility to help learners work around their other commitments which may have otherwise held them back. Chameleon is a very workshop-orientated establishment with many of its learners being drawn to it because they prefer its hands-on approach to learning. For those who haven’t managed to achieve great grades or any grades previously, this is not an issue as English and maths form part of their course at Chameleon. This means that for anyone who was not successful at school or any further education establishment, the Chameleon team works hard to help learners not only gain qualifications in their chosen sector, but also to improve their maths, English, employability skills, and confidence. It is the Chameleon team’s passion, flexibility and commitment to helping people regardless of their background that makes the difference. A one size fits all approach does not work for Chameleon’s learners, so its employees need to be extremely accommodating and able to work with an array of different learners, many of whom have complex learning needs. Ultimately, many of Chameleon’s learners go on to become successful self-employed tradespeople. Indeed, throughout the years, it has played an active role in the community in giving chances to people and improving their career prospects. We are truly rooting for Chameleon School of Construction as it continues to expand and broaden its horizons, and change many lives for the better.
