155 | UK Enterprise Awards 2022 Award-winning building contractor HNB Construction Services Ltd specialises in delivering dream projects to clients throughout Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire and the surrounding counties. We find out more from one of the firm’s Founders in the wake of it winning a UK Enterprise 2022 title. HNB Construction Services Ltd (HNB) was established by Anthony Nicholls, a qualified quantity surveyor, and John Hoddinott, who had over 20 years in construction. Coming from a background of working on large and prestigious projects, Anthony and John started HNB with a desire to bring a superior level of service to clients, something they felt lacking in the industry, as well as recruit and keep quality tradesmen and teams able to work on challenging buildings with character: listed buildings, historical buildings, large private new builds, extensions, and renovations. The business’ core values have not changed over the five years since its foundation, despite the growth of the business. “HNB aims to work with clients from the inception of their dream, advising them in the very early stages of the project to not only help with budgets – but ensure everything is considered and nothing is overlooked,” explains Anthony. “This includes spending time to discover why the client is looking to complete the work, and that their, and the architect’s, vision matches not only what they are trying to achieve but is also practical and achievable.” HNB is unlike its competitors for many reasons. It is as interested in the goals and visions of the client as much as they are the bricks, mortar, and budget. This is why Anthony and John will spend time with potential clients, discussing what they are looking to achieve and making suggestions and giving advice, with no obligation. To this end, it may be that HNB recommend that they are not the construction company to use if the budgets aren’t realistic. Anthony and John then handpick the right HNB team to work on the project, with the site managers being the heroes of the project – to ensure that the client is as comfortable with everything happening as possible, and that the build itself runs smoothly. The teams that HNB hire are selected experienced professionals led by tried and tested site managers who are the client’s reliable first point of contact. They match the site manager with the client to ensure a great working partnership. Unlike most construction companies, HNB nurture their workforce to maintain loyal and hardworking teams that will go the extra mile for their clients and the projects. “This engagement is key to the success of HNB and our projects and turns a potentially stressful process for clients into a pleasurable process of achieving their dream home,” says Anthony. The main challenge, as with any business, is finding the right clients with the budget and buildings or land that suit HNB’s expertise in working with buildings of character but, because of its level of service, HNB is recommended and referred by old clients who are not only delighted with the end result but astounded at the service they received along the way. In this way, with minimal advertising the company has grown year on year since 2017. The core of HNB’s internal culture is ‘service’. Service to each other, the client, the buildings/ projects, contractors, and any other element of day-to-day operations. The owners and directors are in service to not only their clients but their team and staff members too, and vice-versa. “The qualities of pride, achievement, care and loyalty are the natural traits HNB look for in their team members regardless of their experience,” elaborates Anthony, speaking of the firm’s recruitment policy. “By choosing the right site managers to lead projects and demonstrate HNB’s values on site, and to the clients, is how the HNB brand values grow and are strengthened. Training, support, and opportunities to learn and excel are HNB’s management style and all of these elements ensure that HNB’s clients receive the service the company is known for.” Recently, the firm was recognised in the UK Enterprise Awards and bestowed with the Jun22080 Most Innovative Building Contractor – Oxfordshire prestigious title of Most Innovative Building Contractor – Oxfordshire. Now, the future of HNB is to grow and develop strategies of success that the directors have identified pre-and-post pandemic. This includes increasing the capacities of the teams and working with the right kind of clients and the right kind of projects, tho provide satisfaction for all involved. “The company will continue to develop its unique relationship marketing plans and the management of client’s budgets and expectations,” Anthony shares. “The pandemic has accelerated our clients’ desire to own the properties they have always dreamed of - to utilise the additional time they are spending at home – whether working, relaxing, or escaping. Anthony finalises, “HNB will continue to work in partnership with property owners to lovingly restore the UK’s historic past and match this with modern construction methods and design to create unique buildings of character that clients can be proud of.” Contact Details Contact: Anthony Nicholls Company: HNB Construction Services Ltd Web Address: www.hnbltd.co.uk
