24 | UK Enterprise Awards 2022 This new pet store, Chew Valley PetHub Ltd, has already found its way into the hearts of local pet owners. Since opening its doors to the public in August 2021, the company has gained a 5-star reputation for its personal service, expert knowledge and product sourcing. We speak to Chew Valley PetHub Owner, Deborah Neal, to find out more. Based in Chew Magna, Somerset – around 20 minutes south of Bristol – Chew Valley PetHub is an independent pet store catering for dogs, cats and other small animals – including reptiles. The company stocks a wide selection of high-quality foods, treats, and accessories. Homed in a grade 2 listed building that was refurbished by Deborah in the centre of the village, the store has quickly become a favourite with the locals and visitors. Deborah shares, “Our staff are all from the local area. In the 10 months we’ve been open, we’ve built a reputation with many local customers, both young and old. We’ve undertaken extensive research to ensure the foods we stock are of good quality. We work closely with an animal nutritionist to ensure we are able to offer our customers sound advice. This helps our customers make the right choices for their pets.” Unlike many larger competitors, Chew Valley PetHub offers its customers a request system for specific items. This has become extremely popular. Deborah tells us, “We’re based in a close-knit community. Listening to our customers and responding to their needs is second nature. We’ll continue to grow and develop the business based on what our customers want.” As part of its incentive to retain and build on its customer base, Chew Valley PetHub has launched its own loyalty scheme. For every qualifying purchase over £10, customers receive a stamp. Once the card is completed, the customer is then entered into a monthly prize draw. The Chew Valley area is popular with dog walkers who often drop into the village of Chew Magna after a walk in the lanes or across the fields. Understanding the problems of wanting to visit a café or pub with a muddy pooch in tow, Deborah hit on a solution. Chew Valley PetHub’s own DIY ‘Walk-in Dogwash’. During shop hours the store enables customers to use the dog bath, dryer, towels, shampoo, and spritz, all for a small fee. The store even provides an apron for the owner. Of course, Chew Valley PetHub also has its own fully qualified and in-house dog groomer, Sophie. Sophie takes care of all your dog grooming needs including teeth cleaning and descaling. Deborah tells us that this service has been hugely popular so far. Chew Valley PetHub really is a one-stop shop for all your pet’s needs. Every review praises the attentiveness and helpful attitude of the staff. Deborah explains, “We’re a small team. We’ve been together since day one. I strive to ensure everyone is equipped with the skills they need. We are constantly building on our knowledge and we’re all passionate about providing the best possible service. I’m so proud of what we’ve achieved in a short space of time. We’ve done way better than I could have expected so far. But none of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for our amazing team – Sophie (PetHub Grooming), Jo (Shop Manager), Anna, Daisy and Lydia – I’m so proud of them all.” Looking to the future, Deborah is ready for some challenges brought about by the higher cost of living. But she and the team are ready to do everything they can to support the customers and each other.
