SME UK Enterprise Awards 2024/ 162 Best IT Waste Disposal Specialists 2024 – Northern England Enviro Electronics is a WEEE recycling business based in Doncaster that specialises in recycling electrical and electronic waste. Founded in 2009, Enviro Electronics has gone from strength to strength from its inception, seeing significant change and rapid growth since being taken over by George Ackah in 2021. Below, we speak with Amelia Banful, Head of Business Strategy to learn more about Enviro Electronics’ journey to success. For over a decade, Enviro Electronics has dedicated itself to delivering holistic and sustainable disposal services to private and public sector organisations across the UK. The company’s free of charge services are provided to many major organisations, as well as medium sized to smaller businesses and over 4,000 educational institutions. Enviro Electronics collects WEEE, which stands for waste electrical and electronic equipment and includes servers, PCs, laptops, desktops, telephone systems, toasters, vacuum cleaners, fridges, and many more items. “Recycling is becoming a growing necessity,” Amelia tells us. “According to the Global E-waste Monitor report 2020, the UK generates 23.9kg per capita of e-waste per year. The UK has set the goal to be carbon neutral by 2050. Doncaster has gone a step further to be carbon neutral by 2040: a full ten years ahead of the national target.” She goes on to tells us that the Committee of Climate Change’s June 23 report to the Government expressed major concerns with the current pace towards net zero and its associated implications. The report stated that the private sector can support efforts for net zero beyond just reducing their operational emissions, but there are a number of key barriers currently holding back private sector action. This includes the perceived higher cost of certain net zero interventions and limited finance and capacity, especially among smaller businesses. “We therefore want to play our part in helping businesses to recycle more without the price tag,” explains Amelia. “In line with our values, we have also added to our service to include sales of refurbished and new devises to businesses and educational institutions at cost effective prices. This is fast becoming a popular service, given the ever tighter budgets a lot of businesses and educational institutions have to work with given the cost of living crises.” Rightfully, Enviro Electronics has been recognised for its endeavours by a number of prestigious organisations. The company has won the Yorkshire Prestige Awards 22/23 and 23/24 ‘Electronic Waste Specialist of the Year’; been a finalist in the SME Doncaster Chamber Awards 22/23; won the Doncaster Chamber Green Awards 22/23; won the Corporate Livewire Global Awards in 2023 and 2024 for ‘Electronic Waste Specialist of the Year; and of course, has been featured in SME’s UK Enterprise Awards 2024. These illustrious accreditations have been well-deserved, with the hard work that Enviro Electronics has put into supporting its local community. “We are immensely passionate about what we do,” Amelia says. “Enviro might be a small business, but we have a big heart with a passion for building our community and impacting in a big way.” Enviro Electronics is actively working to combat digital poverty through providing IT equipment to those who are affected the most. This was originally to ensure that children have a device to carry out homework on, but the community response soon showed that Enviro Electronics had to go beyond that and support adults and whole families in this initiative. What’s more, Enviro Electronics works with schools for children with special educational needs such as Stonehill School and CSAP to support the holistic development of students, aiding an easier transition from school to work. The business also works closely with the Advance Team – Business Doncaster on their ‘Shaping Your Future’ programmes designed to inspire the minds of children and adults by bringing learning outside of the classroom. Furthermore, supporting businesses and schools with high quality, refurbished IT devices at competitive prices, Enviro Electronics is continuing to help a wider community. Furthermore, the business has dedicated itself to delivering free environmental education to school and businesses, promoting the importance of recycling electronics and how this impacts the environment. Over the past year, Enviro Electronics has provided education to over 100 schools and businesses and has seen a dramatic increase of 43% in the levels of WEE recycled as a result. Conclusively, Enviro Electronics has made remarkable progress in reducing Doncaster’s environmental footprint, through providing a combination of stellar services and sharing vital education with the public. These efforts have solidified the company’s position as an industry leader and deservedly earned Enviro Electronics the title of the Best IT Waste Disposal Specialists 2024 – Northern England.
