UK Enterprise Awards 2025

SME News UK Enterprise Awards 2025/ 80 Most Creative Cocktail Bar 2025 – Pontypridd Tipsy Owl is an independent bar in South Wales, and a destination known for its unique cocktail experiences and creative events. Located in the centre of Pontypridd – a small town around ten miles outside of Cardiff – this bar was opened in 2023 by Aiden Richards, whose passion for creating a vibrant and welcoming space continues to shine through on a daily basis. Tipsy Owl has never been about profit, and its community feel is just one of the things that makes this spot so special. We had the pleasure of catching up with Aiden to learn more about this venture. Blending the historic charm of European bars with the creativity of modern, local establishments – and underpinning it all with the signature warmth of Welsh hospitality – Tipsy Owl aims to provide a place where people can connect, unwind, and enjoy an exceptional cocktail experience with those around them. The community focus this creative bar is built around has been its goal since the beginning, all the way back to when Aiden had the idea of setting up the bar whilst on holiday with a friend in Valletta. Sitting on the cobbled streets of this beautiful Mediterranean city, Aiden wished out loud that an atmosphere like this would come to Pontypridd. “Then why don’t you just do it?”, came the reply, setting the wheels in motion for what would become a project driven not by a business plan, but by heart. Since he had no method to speak of and access to limited resources, the months and years that followed saw Aiden cut his teeth with pop-ups and at temporary events, all whilst looking for the perfect space to bring his dream bar to life. In January 2023, the search came to an end as the future home of Tipsy Owl was found. The work was far from over, and Aiden, joined by a group of friends, spent four long months pouring every drop of time and energy into this space, transforming an empty room into something magical. Opening its doors in August 2023, just in time for the Eisteddfod (Europe’s largest cultural festival held in a different area of Wales each year), Tipsy Owl stands as a reflection of both Aiden’s hard work and all of the places he has visited. Not only does this include the likes of Café Society in Valetta, it also includes sources of inspiration closer to home, particularly in the trendy bars and clubs of the nearby cities of Cardiff and Bristol. With Tipsy Owl showcasing the best of the best when it comes to both European and UK bars, it is no surprise that a big part of its appeal stems from its menus, which similarly demonstrate an international flavour. From a menu comprising such classics as a pina colada, a Long Island iced tea, and a blue lagoon, through to a unique selection of ‘teapots’ offering playful twists on the classics and in-house creations alike, Tipsy Owl’s creativity knows no bounds when it comes to its choice range of year-round cocktails. This is just the beginning however, as every new season at Tipsy Owl brings a fresh batch of inspiration and flavour through its rotating menus. Comprising original, locally sourced creations, these drinks menus see things kept exciting for regulars and enticing for new visitors. Initiatives such as this are important in a post-lockdown world, where many bars are struggling to stay open. Given it is a small and independent venue, Tipsy Owl’s ability to pivot is one of its main strengths, and assures it stays agile. Having come a long way since Aiden first uttered those life-changing words on a street in Valletta, this cocktail bar in Pontypridd is continuing to grow, in size as well as impact. For the rest of the year, its emphasis is on expanding its already impressive events programme, bringing more live music, themed nights, and creative collaborations to life. Aside from this, plans are in place for its first seasonal cocktail masterclass. “We’re also exploring some exciting pop-up ideas and a potential mobile cocktail unit to take the Tipsy Owl experience on the road to festivals, weddings, and community events across South Wales.” Ultimately, Tipsy Owl was never just about drinks, and this unique Welsh bar demonstrates that you don’t have to live in the middle of a big city to see quality, creativity, and connections brought to life. With the best still yet to come, it is our pleasure to recognise the success of Tipsy Owl so far with this award and a place in the programme.
