Welsh Enterprise Awards 2018

SME NEWS / Welsh Enterprise Awards 2018 13 , Since it first began over 22 years ago, Ty-Mawr Lime Ltd has made an enormous contribution to resurrecting the use of traditional building methods and is now a market-leader in the design, manufacture and distribution of environmentally-friendly building materials and systems. We provide a history of the company and the range of products and services it has to offer. Best for Environmentally Friendly Building Materials & Systems 2018 In 1993 Nigel and Joyce Gervis, Founders and Directors of Ty-Mawr Lime, purchased Ty- Mawr, a run-down farm in the heart of the Brecon Beacons National Park. As well as becoming the couple’s family home, this listed property also proved to be the inspiration for their business Ty- Mawr Lime Ltd. The business was established because, on purchasing the property, it was Nigel and Joyce’s intention to restore the building sympathetically and in-line with its architectural heritage. However, the couple faced a crucial issue, in that they were unable to source appropriate lime mortars and plasters. The initial solution was straightforward: using Nigel’s experience, they began making their own. They soon began running courses to help builders to use these traditional materials and have since run tailor-made courses for local authorities, the Canals and Rivers Trust, the Landmark Trust, Townscape Heritage Initiatives and Her Majesties Prisons all over the country. In 2010 and 2011, they hosted and organised the prestigious Summer School for the Prince’s Foundation for Building Community with participants from all over the world. Today, the pair regularly teach and talk at various conferences to professional groups and exhibit at events all over the world including India, America and Jordan. Additionally, their lime mortars, plasters as well as natural insulations, boards and paints have subsequently been supplied to some of the most prestigious conservation, restoration and, more laterally new construction projects all over the UK. Over the years, despite the phenomenal success it has achieved, Ty-Mawr Lime’s founding principles have remained central to its approach since the beginning. These principals are caring for buildings, caring for the environment, and caring for health; this remains at the firm’s core, influencing its ever-expanding product range. Looking to the future, Ty-Mawr Lime continues to invest in its infrastructure and team to efficiently deliver growth. The team continually innovate and have improved products and new product releases planned that will address the needs again of the green construction industry and the drive to make our solid walled buildings more energy efficient.
