For 36 years, Wrenvale has been a leading presence in the local business scene, growing around 400,000 annuals and 2,000 hanging baskets and complimenting the businesses landscaping arm. The expansion that has taken place over the last 30 years is down to the team here seizing opportunities as they arose. Having blossomed into the leading grounds maintenance contractor in South Wales, Wrenvale today covers every aspect of this provision, from cutting grass and trimming hedges and trees through to repairing fences and paving and even clearing gutters. Across its services in this area, the team benefit from access to top-of-the-line equipment, including tractor, pedestrian flail, and rotary mowers as well as precise yet powerful hedge trimmers – which are used only by technicians fully qualified to work at height. A crucial element of the maintenance service offered by Wrenvale is tree felling, which – despite seeming counterintuitive due to the benefits of trees to the environment – is crucial in keeping areas safe or making room for new developments on a plot of land. Whenever it has to fell a tree as part of its encompassing ground maintenance service, this contractor makes sure to removal all debris or chip on the site. The third and final area worth touching on as we explore Wrenvale’s commercial property maintenance service is pressure washing, which is carried out via either tractor-mounted machines – which offer unprecedented coverage – or hot wash-type machines, which wash up to 80oC. Both offer excellent results and prove especially effective when it comes to cleaning the likes of slabs and any block-paved areas. Alongside Wrenvale’s ground maintenance service sits its commercial landscaping department, a team whose capacity to design new sites or redesign existing sites makes them unrivalled in this area. Whether they are clearing hard or soft landscaping, planting trees/shrubs/ plants, or block paving and laying slabs, the skill and dedication of these professionals is on display at every turn. This is seen through many of their designs winning in national bloom competitions, such as Britian in Bloom. Rounding out the trio of services that Wrenvale offers is its aforementioned nursery, which takes the thousands of plants it grows every year and sells them to local authorities and corporations alike. All of these plants are grown in compost that is either peat free or heavily reduced in peat, with all of the fertilisers being plant based and using materials like seaweed. Its integrated pest control policy – which is almost entirely chemical free – is yet another way the team showcase industry-high standards. Given the commercial nature of the work Wrenvale carries out, it will not work on private properties, nor sell online. Instead, it secures most projects from tenders, who source it for local authority and government projects, as well as a variety of regular maintenance schemes. Exploring this further, Nigel told us: “The services we provide are largely for the benefit of the community, enhancing the beauty of local parks and gardens.” He continued: “We also support many local causes and do pro bono work for a local hospice.” Both the longevity of Wrenvale and the impact it has had on the local area over the decades can be attributed to the numerous people who have worked here. Looking back on the history of its evolving team, Nigel explained: “In 36 years, we have employed and trained many people. Some have stayed with us for over 20 years, whereas others have moved on with the training given to similar work as supervisors and foremen. Some periodically call back to see us and their successes are always celebrated.” Leveraging a team who are motivated and generous, a work environment that is challenging but rewarding, and a standard of quality that few companies can match, we are delighted to name Wrenvale Nurseries & Landscaping the Grounds Maintenance Contractors of the Year 2025 in this edition of our annual Welsh Enterprise Awards.
