Welsh Enterprise Awards 2025/ 6 Best Cat Boarding Centre 2025 - North Wales & Pet Care Excellence Award 2025 Wrexham-based Bwlchgwyn Cattery was established in 2004 with the aim of giving cats a good home whilst their owners were on holiday or unable to look after them through ill health. We find out more about the Cattery and its guiding ethos from Owner Gemma Allen as the company triumphs in the Welsh Enterprise Awards 2025 and clinches two prestigious titles. Very much a family-run business, Bwlchgwyn cattery is located out in the countryside in a secluded spot with impressive views of the hills. The surrounding area is peaceful and away from main roads making this delightful location the first choice of many clients, who travel great distances, including Glasgow and London, to ensure their beloved pets enjoy a stay in an idyllic, rural environment. Co-Founder Gemma Allen understands what it’s like to have a pet housed elsewhere while you are on holiday, and felt it was of utmost importance that cats in her care were treated to a little luxury, as well as in a way that fitted their nature. Her semi-outdoor cattery was created around this concept, creating a home-from-home for the furry residents. “Cats should be able to look at the outside world and not feel boxed in,” she explains. “The cats in our care will spend hours sitting by a window staring out at the world beyond.” In addition, Gemma prioritises her cats’ comfort, providing Vetbed for the shelves in addition to what the owners like to bring along with them, encouraging unwashed items from home, such as toys, blankets, and scratching posts to give familiar scents to the cats which helps them to settle. The units all have runs and viewing platforms, plus shelves and ladders to climb as, not only is height important for a cat to feel secure, but it also helps to keep the feline residents occupied and get some exercise whilst in the care of Bwlchgwyn Cattery. Each unit has a garden chair in its run and Gemma notes that she often sees cats curled up and asleep in them, even in the coldest weather. Additionally, when the weather does turn colder, each unit is heated with a radiator and thermostat. Over the years, the Cattery has grown through the addition of units and today gives the impression of a luxury village for cats when clients first see the layout. With capacity for up to 33 cats, there is also the ability to house several “families” of three to four cats, as well as adjoining units to house up to six from one household. The residents are offered a variety of different food types, including jelly, gravy and dry foods, plus Gemma and the team will update families wherever possible with photos of their feline friend while they are away – keeping them informed and reassured of the cats’ good health and Gemma is always keen to continue providing the level of care to her cats that clients have come to expect, as well as striving for growth. She states: “Our main aim is to keep improving the facilities we have and to keep improving our care.” For such dedication to ensuring that all of its boarders are happy and content, Bwlchgwyn Cattery gained not one, but two, notable accolades in the Welsh Enterprise Awards 2025, being named Best Cat Boarding Centre 2025 - North Wales, and receiving the highly coveted Pet Care Excellence Award 2025.
