Rachel Buscall both co-founded and is the MD of New Capital Link, an exclusive alternative investment firm based in London. Before co-creating the firm in 2020, Rachel worked in a number of capacities, getting her start as a pension administrator before going into business for herself as the owner of a local tearoom. Returning to the world of finance after selling the business, Rachel has gone from strength to strength across this environment in the years since, resulting in her recognition with this title. We caught up with Rachel for more on her diverse career.
An entrepreneur, philanthropist, and leader, Rachel Buscall’s journey to becoming a leading authority in the UK’s alternative investment landscape began in the world of corporate finance, where a pension administrator role for a local financial services company provided her with the foundational knowledge that would lead to her to one day become the MD of an industry-leading firm. After four years spent educating herself on both investment principles and the mechanics of the market, an opportunity came knocking.
However, it was not the one that Rachel or anyone else could have expected, as this future managing director of an investment firm stepped away from the industry to become the owner of a small business – a bustling tearoom in the heart of Chelmsford. Less of a detour and more a crucial part of building her into the experienced leader she is today, this venture allowed Rachel to experience issues around cash flow, supply-chain logistics, and customer-service first hand. All of this proved invaluable in what came next.
Returning to the world of finance in 2020, armed with an empathy for the inner mechanics of a healthy business (something many finance professionals lack), Rachel identified the need for a transparent, client gateway for both sophisticated and high-net-worth investors to enter into the dynamic environment that defines alternative investments. Thus, New Capital Link was born, created for those high-calibre investors who sought out alternative income sources but were put off by the lack of clarity formerly inherent in the sector.
Knowing the need was for a professional introducer, which could seek out opportunities to boost investors’ capital without them having to relinquish control of their funds or decision-making processes, Rachel told us: “At New Capital Link, we act as an alternative investment introducer, locating private investments that match our risk-to-reward profile, and then connect HNW, UHNW, and sophisticated investors with those that meet their criteria.”
In the five years since New Capital Link began, it has solidified itself as a market leader, renowned for its integrity-based operational model that sees no funds handled or decisions made on behalf of its investor clients, by serving this purpose. By placing the power solely in the hands of the experienced investor clients it boasts, the relationships built are done so on a foundation of trust and mutual respect – not the pressure of a sale.
The communication that stems as a result is crucial for Rachel, not only for the sake of her business’ success, but also for managing the work-life balance that comes along with being a full-time mother. To this end, Rachel – who works from New Capital Link’s office in Essex – communicates with all clients and staff remotely, feeding into the remote shifts that have defined communication across numerous businesses over the last decade. Despite this, having a strong, focused, and aligned internal culture remains vital for the firm.
With the unique strengths of its culture, team, and MD in tow, New Capital Link has been working on some initiatives set to define the future of this pioneering company. Rachel explained: “We have launched a new B2B platform where we white label investments and pass them to independent financial advisers and wealth managers, as opposed to dealing with consumers directly.” She continued: “This is all part of our bid to increase consumer protections in the alternative sector”, reflecting the firm’s innovation.
Rachel is keen on pursing this innovative streak outside of her work in finance, seen through her having recently started both an interior design company and become a franchise owner of F45 Training, an Australian operator of fitness centres worldwide.
