How Can VoIP Help Start-ups Grow?

VoIP phone systems are becoming an increasingly important mode of communication for businesses, for established corporations as much as for start-ups. The benefits of VoIP for business are many, helping companies to communicate better and become more cost-efficient. With landlines set to be switched off and converted to digital networks by 2025, now is the time to switch your startup onto a VoIP phone system.

What is VoIP?

Voice over internet protocol (VoIP) is a phone system which, rather than traditional landlines, relies on internet connection to make and receive calls. It is becoming increasingly popular due to its flexibility – rather than needing the services of a local phone company and a physical phone hub, you need only an internet connection. VoIP systems only require high-speed internet and a VoIP service provider who handles the calls. Any computer or mobile device can be turned into a phone by using a VoIP phone number and business phone app.

How can VoIP benefit startups?

When starting a business, effective communication is one of the biggest challenges. Operating as a small team means that both workforce and budget are limited, while trying to grow a company and expand customer base. VoIP can be a great tool for startups who are looking to grow their business.

Lauren Davies of bOnline explains: “In an ever changing world and in a world where businesses and people need to be more connected than ever before, a good VoIP phone system can really be the difference between a business thriving and a business struggling to maintain customers and growth. IF a business has the right solutions for connectivity, it really can fly high.”

Keeps costs low

One of the major benefits of VoIP systems for startups is its low upfront cost. For those companies trying to scrimp and save, VoIP can be an invaluable asset. Because the systems operate over the internet, they only require minimal infrastructure for the set-up and have very affordable pricing. This means that startups and SMEs can keep their initial investment low while still getting set up.

Businesses can save even more time and money by choosing to use existing resources such as internet lines of softphones.

Optimises employee productivity

Trying to work efficiently can be a challenge for startups, especially with a limited number of employees. This means that they need to do everything within their power to optimise employee workflow and productivity, from having the right HR software for the startup in question, to ensuring the VoIP provider is what the company needs.

VoIP services, unlike traditional telephone services, come with a range of different features which can help maximise employee productivity. For example, the sequential calling feature which allows calls to be directed to free employees to optimise their available time. Other features can help to automate certain tasks and free up employee time for more important business activity.

More scalable

Creating a scalable business is one of the biggest challenges faced by entrepreneurs. When setting up a business, there are many costs to incur which can make it enormously expensive to get your company up and running. VoIP systems are easily scalable and can be much cheaper and easier to implement than expensive communication systems.

The initial setup of VoIP systems (adding or removing phone lines) can be done in mere minutes and at a low cost. This means that it gives total flexibility to startups who may want to upscale and downscale at different stages of their business.

Easy to move

Because VoIP systems are portable, it means that employees can work from anywhere. In our current business landscape where many employees work from home, VoIP systems can act as a lifeline. Many startups are unable to afford office overheads or rent a designated working space.

However, VoIP systems can enable remote operations to run smoothly and for employees to access the company’s communication systems regardless of where they are located – from their mobile phone, laptop or any other device. Employers and employees should always be mindful of their cybersecurity and what precautions they take to ensure online safety.

Cheaper calls

Many businesses rely on international calls as part of their day to day operations, allowing them access to far-reaching clients and to expand their customer base. However, international calls made through the traditional phone system can result in exorbitant phone bills – not something that startups want to pay for. Luckily, most VoIP providers offer very cheap international rates, including local numbers and toll-free numbers.

Depending on the package chosen, companies could also purchase local numbers for the countries they call most frequently. This allows them to speak to customers at standard rates while avoiding any call blockages. Switching to VoIP services can save companies huge amounts of money annually.
