Greater London Enterprise Awards 2026/ 22 Best Insurance Governance Consultancy 2026 – Central London Primarily conducting compliance audits of insurance agents for London market insurers, or what its clients know as ‘delegated authority audits’, Otter Audit and Consultancy Services Ltd is renowned for its unblemished track record of audit delivery and investment in the future of this industry. Director Alex Jones told us more about Otter Audit on the back of its award in this programme. In the world of insurance, it is not uncommon for an insurer to contract another insurance firm to sell insurance or handle claims on their behalf. This can be a risk for insurers and can lead to negative customer outcomes when not handled properly. Otter Audit is sent in to mitigate that risk and make sure that the insurance is being transacted properly and according to contractual, regulatory, and ethical requirements. Auditing, whilst essential, is not something most people view unfavourably. Thus, Alex explained: “We chose the name Otter Audit as everyone hate auditors but loves otters.” There is more to this, however, and the name helps put people at ease ahead of what can often feel like a stressful process. Alex has lost count of the amount times people have asked about the name, and told of the coincidence that otters are their favourite animal. “People are always glad to see the auditor leave but maybe they are slightly less worried to see us arrive.” Company name aside, what makes Otter Audit stand out is that has invested heavily in the future of delegated authority audits since it first came on the scene a decade ago. In the early days this involved on-thejob learning and one-to-one training, but its growth has seen a more formal layer of training introduced, with the consultancy working hard to create a space where its people can learn, try, and have any knowledge gaps caught before they get to the customer, all whilst delivering the high-quality product people expect. The desire to learn is the hallmark of any strong delegated authority auditor, and with the rate of change today feeling relentless, staying ahead of the curve is an ongoing process. As Alex told us: “This is great for our business as it creates demand for our services, but for the professional it can be challenging. You feel that you never quite get your head around something before it changes again. You need to be open to be proven wrong and know what tools you have access to in order to get to the right answer.” Lloyd’s and London market insurance where Otter Audit operates are also much different to normal insurance. It is not about getting cheap car insurance (as many people at events have asked members of the team), it is about insurance for satellites, container ships, their M&A activity, or shadow lottery. This scope, Alex believes, is what London is all about – and a big part of the reason why insurance is one of its strongest industries. As a result, the market for delegated authority businesses keeps growing, and the demand for delegated authority professionals with it. And yet a lack of entry-level jobs persists, with many large companies seeing these low-level positions as a cost burden rather than a breeding ground for the next generation of talent. Again, this is where Otter Audit shines, with its pledge to develop the future of delegated authority. On the back of this, Otter Audit remains confident in its ability to deliver its audit reports on time, another area in which it is unmatched by its competitors. Having recently launched a Canadian subsidiary that is still finding its feet, the company is hoping to progress in Canada much the same as it has in the UK. Alongside this, the implications of the new audit scope from the LMA are being considered, with these changes allowing the consultancy to reassess and readjust its approach to keep pushing what is achievable. Finally, reflecting Otter Audit’s recognition in our Greater London Enterprise Awards, Alex Jones takes the time to mention a couple of names whose work in developing future talent has proven key in the consultancy being awarded. These include Karan Maka, who is running the Women in DA group, an initiative providing support, training, and networking for women in the delegated authority profession, and Victoria Catling, who hosts the next generation networking group for younger professionals in this space.
