Northern Enterprise Awards 2025/ 4 Set in the heart of the beautiful Cumbrian countryside, Hartland House offers residential care for those aged 65 and over. Situated on a private road on the edge of the village of Milnthorpe, Hartland overlooks the picturesque River Bela and Dallam Deer Park. Catering for 32 residents, the home is expertly managed by Leanne Scrogham and a passionate team of care workers, housekeepers and maintenance staff. Assessing your options for later retirement or helping a loved one to make their care plans can be challenging. Which location to choose, and what levels of assistance or care will be needed, now and in the future, are questions that require serious consideration. Finding a home that caters for all levels of care, has a full programme of events and activities, and is situated in a perfectly tranquil location may seem like a big ask. Nestled in rolling green hills but only 3 miles from major routes, Hartland House has proved itself to be the perfect choice for many. Offering a full range of care and support, including dementia care, Hartland is a not-for-profit organisation with charitable status. One of over 100 societies, Hartland is part of a larger charitable foundation under the umbrella of Abbeyfield England. Originally established in 1956, The Abbeyfield Foundation (now Abbeyfield England) was established as a scheme to alleviate loneliness. Founder Richard CarrGomm, OBE, was a social reformer who aimed to bring people together in ordinary houses where they could find support and companionship in their own communities. By maintaining strong links with the community, making time for residents and ensuring everyone is considered, Abbeyfield still upholds its founder’s vision today. His Majesty King Charles III has served as Patron for the charity since 1979. Providing first-class care and facilities, Hartland covers all essential costs from bills to food, and personal care to support. Any surplus funds are reinvested in the home to improve facilities and quality of life for the residents. Of course, moving to a residential care facility can require some adjustment, and many new residents may have never spent any length of time in a co-living facility before. So a warm, considerate welcome is essential to ensure a smooth transition into their new home. Director of Care and Operations Leanne tells us: “We don’t believe that our residents Best Residential Care Facility 2025 - North West
should have to compromise their standards in any way. We’re here to enhance their quality of life and ensure they feel connected to the community inside the home and to the wider local community. We provide responsive, effective care, and we’re always here to listen and help.” Hartland is committed to helping its residents maintain as much independence as possible and avoids enforcing unreasonable restrictions. As part of this initiative, Leanne and the team actively seek the views and ideas of residents to improve services and facilities, as well as on the subject of personal care. It’s normal to worry that our own preferences may have to take a backseat when living in collectivity; however, at Hartland, every resident is respected as an individual. Leanne says: “All our staff take a personal interest in each resident, their memories, their likes and dislikes, interests, wishes, even new things they’d like to try are all important to us. We do our very best to create an environment that’s stimulating and supportive for everyone.” With special interests and hobbies noted on the initial care plan, event coordinators Kath and Heather organise a range of outings and activities throughout the week. In a normal week, the schedule might include chair exercise sessions, sing-alongs, discussion groups, crafts, quizzes and games. Participation is optional, and there are plenty of cosy areas available for those who prefer to pass their time more peacefully. Hartland is a member of NAPA - the National Activity Providers Association, which offers ideas, support and learning to staff members. The team also regularly attends Dignity in Dementia meetings to help with planning activities for residents with dementia. To help residents with hearing or sight loss participate in activities, the home has also procured some specialist equipment. Wondering whether favourite snacks or meals will be available may also be a concern for those moving into care. At Hartland, The River Bela Bistro, managed by Sarah Shaw and her team, serves up meals and drinks from 7 am until 8 pm - no one goes hungry on their watch. Always seeking ways to improve residents’ safety and security, Hartland House has embarked on a collaboration with Nobi, a manufacturer of ‘smart’ lights. The lights, which resemble a normal bedside lamp or ceiling pendant, use AI technology to prevent and detect falls. Motion sensors trigger automatic night lighting when a resident gets out of bed, reducing the risk of falls. If a fall is likely or should occur, carers are notified within 30 seconds via a mobile app. Staff can also monitor every room via a Nobi dashboard. As the first residential care facility in the UK to trial Nobi, the results reported by Hartland were startling. An 84% reduction in the number of falls, and, where falls did occur, staff responded 28 times faster due to Nobi notifications. The trial was so successful that the NHS Integrated Care Board of Lancashire and South Cumbria has now rolled out Nobi lights in 500 living units in over 50 care homes in the region. Commenting on the Nobi light trial, Rebecca Etherington, the Wellbeing Lead at Hartland, said: “As caregivers, it is truly reassuring that thanks to Nobi, we no longer miss any falls and can also provide lightning-fast assistance after a fall. By avoiding falls, Nobi also gives us a lot of valuable time back, which we can then spend on what really counts: the happiness of our residents. As far as I'm concerned, Nobi lights belong in every residential care home!” Manufactured in Belgium, Nobi’s products are now distributed in 21 countries worldwide. Staying true to its core values, but continuing to embrace new ideas and technology, we’re eager to see what innovations the team at Hartland House will come up with next. Northern Enterprise Awards 2025/ 6 Feeling like a square peg in a round hole is never comfortable. But in mainstream education, that sense of not belonging or feeling misunderstood can have far-reaching consequences. Committed to offering every child and young person the tools, guidance and belief to build a brighter future, regardless of their circumstances, JEP Youth Engagement is challenging perceptions around alternative education provision. We take a look at the company and its journey to find out more. In 2016, one error in judgment left teacher Jamie Pilling jobless. Following a conviction for drink-driving, Jamie felt lost, ashamed, and convinced he’d thrown away everything he’d worked so hard to build. Facing his own struggles with mental health, Jamie soon became aware of the vital importance of having someone by his side to help navigate the way forward when he simply couldn’t see it. After taking time to reflect, Jamie turned his attention to the plight of the many young people struggling in mainstream education or dealing with domestic challenges. He made it his mission to stop them slipping through the cracks by building a solution which offers genuine support. Wanting to provide these youngsters with a viable alternative, in 2020, Jamie began offering one-to-one education and mentoring sessions, and JEP Youth Engagement was born. In response to demand, by 2021, Jamie had already opened JEP’s first education hub in Salford. Today, with 3 education hubs across Salford and Bolton, the company offers inclusive education, enrichment, and pastoral support to young people aged 4 to 25. JEP now employs over 60 staff members supporting more than 100 young people every week. JEP’s Business Development Manager, Jordan Kay, tells us: “We’re determined to support young people to fulfil their potential. We help them re-engage, grow in confidence and move forward with purpose. By offering genuine support, we empower them to turn things around and help them believe in a future they can’t yet see for themselves.” The company’s mission is to create individualised education opportunities which enable young people to thrive. JEP underpins this approach through its commitment to 3 core values: empowerment, opportunity and individuality. With a range of offers, including bespoke academic learning, vocational training, one-to-one mentoring, counselling support, enrichment & mentoring, SEND-specific support, and therapeutic interventions, JEP has a multitude of options with which to tailor individual solutions. Jordan explains: “We run Primary, Secondary, and Post-16 Alternative Provision hubs in Salford and Bolton, alongside our Occupational Studies and Sports Hub, and our growing Counselling and Care and Respite services. We’ve also recently launched our VTCT-accredited Hair and Beauty course as an additional vocational option for our young people. Our alternative provision provides both academic and enrichment pathways to support their educational journey.” JEP is an approved provider for Salford, Bolton, Bury, Trafford, Wigan, Manchester, Lancashire and Northwest placements. By offering a breadth of services and working alongside local authorities, schools, social services teams and families, the team ensures that each young person’s needs are catered for holistically. With a team consisting of academic subject specialists, industry-leading vocational training experts, and experienced, qualified counselling staff, JEP are proud to provide high quality interventions across our services, delivered by best-in-class practitioners. Classes are taught in state-of-the-art facilities, including a vocational workshop, sports hall and a ‘new for 2025’ hair and beauty salon. Encouraging pupils to attend courses is often the first challenging step to making a change. However, in the last academic year, JEP recorded 89% attendance for primary and 75% for secondary and post-16 groups, outperforming national averages for alternative providers. Student exam results are impressive too, with 100% of those enrolled achieving Level 2 English, 85% achieving Level 1 Maths, and all of the young people enrolled in Level 2 Occupational Studies attaining a recognised qualification. Jordan says: “We're proud to operate within vibrant, welcoming and uniquely designed education hubs that are purpose-built to support vulnerable young people. Our culture is guided by the principle of being stronger together; as such, we’re mindful to support each other as well as the young people we work with.” Most Supportive Alternative Education & Youth Service Provider 2025 - North West JEP Youth Engagement Ltd
In addition to core services, JEP also offers residential and respite care for young people aged 8 to 18 who may be dealing with emotional, behavioural or complex needs. The company’s residential care home in Chorley offers a safe, supportive environment for those requiring solo occupancy accommodation, where every child receives individualised care. By giving young people a sense of space, security and belonging, JEP’s caregivers prioritise emotional wellbeing, personal growth and the development of essential life skills. One young resident said: “When I come to JEP, it’s the only place I feel like people get me. I can just be myself, no pressure.” The team, praised by local authority caseworkers as a ‘lifeline’ when dealing with complex cases, is also making a huge difference to families working through challenging circumstances. JEP delivers only the highest levels of service and safeguarding. By regularly reviewing Quality Assurance processes, the company ensures its procedures and outcomes always exceed expected standards. Working with young people presenting challenging or complex special education needs, each team member is keen to be seen as a positive role model. Coming from a wide range of backgrounds, each contributes to a culture of collaboration and ongoing learning and development. Unsurprisingly, the recruitment process is rigorous, with candidates screened not only for professional achievement but, more importantly, for their personality and passion for helping young people to fulfil their potential. Committed to supporting as many young people as possible, JEP’s counselling service is already providing support further afield across the North West, Midlands and South. Having recently acquired a new Primary provision site in Walkden, Salford, expected to open in January 2026, the team is also exploring different options to expand its educational offering into Greater Manchester and the wider North West region. Northern Enterprise Awards 2025/ 8 Best Educational Support Service 2025 - West Yorkshire Every child deserves a chance. And it was a chance meeting between former deputy head teacher Katharine Young and specialist dyslexia tutor Maggi Hewitt that led to the creation of the Young Minds Matter Study Centre in 2017. Celebrating its 8th successful year, the centre supports children from Year 1 to Year 11 whenever they need a little extra help to succeed. Based in Pontefract, West Yorkshire, the Young Minds Matter Study Centre was founded to help those children and young people struggling in mainstream education, those wanting to excel, and everyone in between. A small, welcoming establishment, the centre places its focus on making learning a fun and positive experience. Supporting children who find the school environment difficult to navigate, Young Minds Matter offers daytime skills-based courses in science, design technology, and cookery, to name just a few. In the evening, specialist GCSE teachers take up the baton, helping older students master all the subjects and techniques they need to succeed in their exams in addition to educational support for primary students SAT’s and adult learning. As a small business, the centre is both reactive and flexible, tailoring programmes to individual learning needs. By offering ‘step outs’ to local schools, Young Minds Matter also helps students and parents waiting for longer-term specialist education placements. Each of the Young Minds Matter founders is driven by a passion to give children the best education possible. Katharine employs her extensive knowledge and experience in education to create positive outcomes. She tells us: “Education is the key that opens up opportunities for the future. That’s why we want to build on the work carried out in schools and deliver tailored, personalised learning in a friendly, supportive environment. This develops confidence and enables children and young people to fulfil their potential, whatever their ability or barriers to learning.” As for Maggi, a former nurse, when her daughter Paige, was diagnosed with dyslexia and dyscalculia, she knew she would do everything in her power to ensure Paige could succeed in education. This led Maggi to explore the Orton-Gillingham approach and become a certified therapeutic tutor for children with dyslexia. Since 2020, Katharine and Maggi have noted that demand for their services has grown. Maggi tells us: “It’s sad, but no one could have predicted the effect the COVID-19 lockdowns would have on children. For many, social skills are lacking. Levels in reading, phonics and maths are below where they were, but pupils are still expected to achieve at the same level. We’re seeing lots more children finding the school environment challenging. Larger class sizes, additional noise and lengthy lessons are resulting in poorer concentration.” Having built solid relationships with Wakefield Council and a host of local schools, Young Minds Matter welcomes most of its new afterschool primary and high school students through word-of-mouth referrals from happy parents. Katharine says: “We’re so lucky to have a wonderful parent support system. As a small centre, we prioritise the areas we know we excel in. We attribute our success to the kind, inclusive working environment we’ve built for both staff and students. Of course, we follow best practices when recruiting new staff, but ultimately, anyone joining the team needs to be a great fit. We take that very seriously.” Atop this, Young Minds Matter also works with adults who need to upgrade their qualifications so they can change their career or progress in their existing industry. No matter age or ability, Young Minds Matter continues to offer premium educational support. We’re happy to see Young Minds Matter building on its successes, and look forward to what Katharine, Maggi and the team will achieve in 2026. Established in 2021, York-Andrews Spectacle Lounge is a truly independent optical practice situated in the quaint market town of Ulverston, offering personalised, professional eye care and a brilliant range of eyewear. Boasting a specialist team with more than 115 years’ combined experience, who started serving the community of Ulverston, together, back in 2013. The team serves patients from the surrounding areas, countries and continents and has access to state-of-the-art equipment ( including OPTOMAP 200 degree retinal scans) . Patients can expect a friendly service and optimal level of care that always puts them at ease. We speak to Principle Optometrist, Tracey York-Andrews to learn more. Best Independent Opticians 2025 - Cumbria First and foremost, what truly makes YorkAndrews Spectacle Lounge stand out is the way it makes space and time for its patients, with this including longer appointments. “We are blessed by the moments when patients walk in with a bunch of flowers and a card and the powerful words, “Thank you for saving my life”,” says Tracey. “We love delivering quality, personalised, professional eye care; seeing patients who are struggling to read suddenly improve exponentially with the help of Schoolvision and helping patients find their pair of specs that they love! It’s so important to love not only your spectacle frame, but also the great quality lenses specifically picked out for your chosen tasks!” Indeed, York-Andrews Spectacle Lounge incorporates services such as Schoolvision into its offering, which is a specialist service designed to provide aid to children, teens and adults, who are struggling with their reading. “Schoolvision studies the way our eyes work together as we read; in particular the relationship between vision and difficulties with reading (including dyslexia)”. When words and letters appear to shift, jump or move, they send confused messages to the brain, which can cause difficulties in reading. Schoolvision addresses these issues, that routine eye tests might not detect. YorkAndrews Spectacle Lounge will focus on vision correction and alignment, as well as other factors in order to help provide tailored solutions to improve reading function. The tailored solutions in Schoolvision, depend on each individual patient, and could include coloured lenses or prism corrections. Reading affects one’s confidence, and can have an impact on enjoyment of reading and behaviour, so even though we have noticed dramatic improvements in older patients (even in their 70’s), the sooner we can help, the less the patients have to struggle, and the sooner they can reap the benefits of Schoolvision. “We focus on delivering quality care in a relaxed but professional environment. Patients feel comfortable and even pop in as they walk past just to say “hello”.” The friendly, expert team at York-Andrews Spectacle Lounge have become renowned for their ability to deliver excellent eye care, as well as in helping customers choose the perfect eyewear. The optical practice works with a great range of hand-picked companies from which it sources very specific lenses to cover very specific tasks, and they come in a range of prices. “We aim to meet the needs of patients, from designer to budget, and go the extra mile to find eyewear that the patients love,” Tracey tells us. “To the point that we actually have our own brand of eyewear called Lakes and See, that meets the needs of the patient that wants something a bit different, or daring, that we can’t source from our UK suppliers.” There have been significant developments in the world of spectacle lenses, including Zeiss’s amazing CLEARVIEW single vision lenses, which bring greater clarity, reduced peripheral distortion, and thinner lenses with superb coatings, and at a fantastic price. Tracey explains that there are some great new lens designs for those patients who are needing a bit of help with flexible prescriptions, no longer limiting patients to just single vision, bifocal, and varifocal lenses. She says, “Our fantastic range of suppliers means we can source superb lenses such as the latest anti-fatigue and office lenses, as well as sports lenses, and more. We work with the biggest names in optics as well as the bespoke, smaller companies.” Ultimately, York-Andrews Spectacle Lounge is going from strength to strength, with it having been awarded four awards in the past 24 months. The practice is on an upward trajectory as it draws in those patients who want to be valued and who also seek a greater range of products, whilst dealing with a team they have come to trust. The team will continue to keep their fingers on the pulse of the industry and train in the latest lens technologies to ensure they are ahead of the curve and providing only the very best in eye care and eyewear! Northern Enterprise Awards 2025/ 10 New Digital Marketing Agency of the Year 2025 Alex Humphries launched Agilita Digital (Agilita) in 2025 to be more than just another marketing agency. Having spent over a decade working in senior marketing positions in both agency and in-house teams, he’s seen too many businesses weighed down by unnecessary complexity and a lack of transparency in their marketing. Thus, Alex wanted to do things differently – to build an entirely unique agency that is genuinely agile, accountable, and focused on driving results that actually matter. “I first learned about agile and scrum back when I worked for another agency that was experimenting with applying those principles to marketing campaigns,” Alex begins. “It made complete sense to me: shorter sprints, quicker feedback loops, and the ability to adapt in real time. It worked for their clients, and I’ve carried those principles with me ever since. Agilita is built entirely around that mindset – plan, test, learn, improve.” Agilita Digital works with established SMEs across the UK, mainly within the automotive, ecommerce, renewables, and trade industries. Every project it takes on is tailored to the business and its unique goals, whether paid media, SEO, content, email and automation, branding, or consultancy. Alex says, “The mission is simple: to help good businesses grow through honest communication, agile delivery, and measurable progress.” Businesses are becoming more and more focused on achieving meaningful results. They want to know the impact their marketing is having on leads, sales, and overall growth, and they’re asking smarter questions, too, which is pushing the industry in a positive direction. As such, through Agilita, Alex focuses on what really matters and what will actually work for the client. Sometimes it’s SEO, sometimes it’s paid media, and other times, it’s email marketing and automation. Meanwhile, it could be all about pure consultancy and training, where Alex will deliver sessions on strategy and direction, acting as a sounding board rather than just an extra pair of hands. “Every agency says they’re different, but I genuinely believe in a different way of doing things. For me, marketing should be efficient, clinical, and built entirely around driving real results. It’s not about throwing everything at the wall to see what sticks; it’s about knowing what levers to pull and when.” Alex goes on to say, “From a personal perspective, I’ve always been interested in how marketing fits into the bigger picture of a business. There’s far more to it than posting on social media or sending a few emails. It’s about how marketing, sales, and operations work together to move things forward. When those three areas are properly aligned, everything else starts to click. That's where I like to focus – where strategy and execution meet to actually drive growth!” Agilita Digital being named New Digital Marketing Agency of the Year 2025 is a reflection of the hard work that Alex has put into building a strong foundation over the past year, and the solid, trustworthy reputation it has already gained for how it works. “[This] is a proud moment for both me and Agilita,” he comments. “To be recognised so early on, among so many established names in the north, really means a lot. It confirms what I believed when I started out: there’s still space for a straight-talking, results-driven agency that focuses on what matters. Over the past year, I’ve had the chance to work with some brilliant businesses across the UK, and seeing their progress is what motivates me every day. He continues, “More than anything, the recognition adds even more drive for the future. My goal is for Agilita to keep growing as a genuine partner to the businesses it supports – an agency people are confident recommending because they know they’ll get clarity, consistency, and care from day one. Huddersfield has been the perfect base to begin this journey. The support from the local business community has been fantastic, and I’m excited to keep giving back as Agilita grows and makes and even bigger impact.” With 2026 right around the corner, this marks the end of Agilita Digital’s first full year in business, and Alex is ready to start the next chapter. Next, he will be working on refining his approach and growing a client base that he is genuinely proud of. In building on that momentum, he will continue to strengthen existing relationships and keep improving his service offering. Alex concludes, “The aim is simple: finish year one on a high, start year two with intent, and keep pushing Agilita forward as a trusted, agile marketing partner for businesses that want real progress.” Company name: Agilita Digital Contact name: Alex Humphries Website: www.agilitadigital.co.uk

At P4 Solar, the process begins with a no-obligation, free onsite survey, followed by a detailed proposal which outlines energy savings, recommended equipment, and a full breakdown of the project cost. “We never pressurise anyone to proceed; always providing potential clients space and time to think through our proposal in detail,” says Peter. “We understand that moving forward with a solar panel installation is a big financial decision.” Once the client decides to go ahead with the project, the company is sure to communicate with them regularly and clearly, using its CRM system to log all communication touch points including phone calls, emails, and SMS. This tool enhances P4 Solar’s ability to deliver exceptional customer service, which comes alongside high-quality solar panel installations, using the most advanced products on the market. Making it all happen is a dedicated team who are each aligned on the same customer values, always being highly respectful and polite. Customers often comment on the top-notch service levels they’ve received from P4 Solar, with the company having more than 400 fivestar reviews online. One person shares, “They gave time and thought to our wishes and needs. The installation was efficient and done without disturbance to us. The after-service is great. A five-star company.” P4 Solar is particularly proud to have installed an astonishing 1,000 solar panels in Ilkley, where Peter, Fred, and several of its employees reside, since its establishment just over three years ago. As a result, Ilkley people and businesses saved more than £56,000 in electricity costs in the first year, and this is predicted to increase to £4 million over 25 years and see £1.5 million in received payments from the grid over the same timeframe. P4 Solar is also an active member of the Green Economy, the sector development organisation for business providing green technologies, low carbon solutions, and environmental services. This allows it to take part in monthly networking events and presentations to showcase its work to other members and further enhance business relationships and sustainability opportunities. Furthermore, P4 Solar contributes largely to its local community, supporting local projects such as Ilkley Rugby Club, The Queens Hall in Burley in Wharfedale, Curly Hill campsite, and Ben Rhydding Scout and Guide group. These community hubs are already benefiting from reduced energy costs and are set to save and earn back from the grid a combined £1.2 million over the next 25 years. In addition, P4 Solar has previously sponsored and supported Ilkley Town Football Club for two years and has recently committed to sponsoring Ilkley Cricket Club, alongside installing solar panels at the club as part of this commitment. “We are delighted to have helped futureproof our local clubs and important community facilities for the long-term which will give local families the ability to access and enjoy these important facilities for many years to come,” Peter comments. It doesn’t end there, for P4 Solar is also proud to run an initiative where it plants 100 trees with every installation it undertakes, so far having planted an incredible 43,635 trees. This scheme is carried out in partnership with Ecologi, with its trees distributed to countries including Madagascar, Tanzania, Uganda, and many more. As such, tree species are carefully chosen based on the local ecosystem to promote reforestation and support local communities. “We take pride in contributing to this initiative every day and pass on the planted trees to our lovely customers,” says Peter. An organisation very much focused on building a better future, P4 Solar of course has its sight set on what’s next – and it’s looking extremely positive. It is a business focused on growing in an everevolving, although saturated, market. “Our USPs set us apart from our competitors,” explains Peter. “Our customer-focused approach and high-quality solar installations are encouraging a high number of customer referrals, which is increasing year on year. We are looking to expand across all of our key markets with more focus on commercial and new build opportunities within the next two years.” To learn more about P4 Solar and its outstanding service offering, please visit the company website. Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust (Butterfly) was founded by Kate Farnell in 2002, following her own thyroid cancer diagnosis in June 2000. Originally offering support locally as Butterfly North East, it expanded its reach across the UK, becoming the only charity in England to offer encouragement, information, and support solely to people affected by thyroid cancer. Best Thyroid Cancer Patient Support Charity 2025 As someone with first-hand experience of thyroid cancer diagnosis and treatment, Kate Farnell brings a deeper level of empathy and compassion to Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust. Her experience goes further still, with her volunteering alongside medical professionals as a Thyroid Cancer Patient Advisor at the Northern Cancer Care Centre (NCCC) in Newcastle upon Tyne to help patients through their treatment journey which she did for 20 years. Here, Kate has acquired extensive expertise and knowledge that enhances her ability to provide the very best care for thyroid cancer patients in the UK. As a result of Kate’s work with her local hospital, Butterfly has received multiple awards including P5 Excellence in Oncology Award, NHS Innovation Award, and Inspirational Woman of the Year Award. Kate was also honoured with an MBE by His Majesty King Charles in 2014 for her relentless and inspiring work in improving the treatment journey for thyroid cancer patients. For 23 years, Kate has provided personalised, relevant, and sympathetic support for thousands of people, many of whom have become personal friends and joined the charity as volunteer support contacts, and two of these people have become Trustees. She continues to amplify the thyroid cancer patient’s voice, influencing national treatment protocol decisions by being invited to share her input on several medical committees, including the National Institute for Clinical Excellence, Scottish Medicines Committee, British Association of Endocrine and Thyroid Surgeons, National Cancer Research Institute, and Cancer Research UK, for which she writes the patient information for thyroid cancer clinical trials. Butterfly has also been presented at major national and international thyroid cancer medical conferences, with Kate addressing audiences in Canada, France, Greece, and London, as well as attending conferences in Italy and Spain. This has enabled the charity to further grow its network of associates, increasing patient support. Patients undergoing treatment for thyroid cancer often have to stay in isolation for a short period, thus more of Butterfly’s work has included improving these difficult hospital stays by upgrading isolation suites. This has involved beautiful artwork on the walls ,individualised bedding, nightwear, hobby items, and treats for younger patients. The charity has also provided televisions, internet provision, and gaming units. Thirty eight isolation suites have had a Butterfly enhancement. Additionally, Butterfly has financially supported a variety of research projects with the aim of improving the outcomes of thyroid cancer patients. Notably, a successful PHD project sponsored by the charity has been published in the BMJ (British Medical Journal), available to read here. The charity has also published four patient information films, viewable online. This includes a generic film, Thyroid Cancer Uncovered; Living with Papillary Thyroid Cancer; My Thyroid and Me, primarily aimed at the younger patient; and Christine’s Story, which focuses on those patients diagnosed with advanced thyroid cancer. Kate’s profound work ethic is undeniable – but the charity also wouldn’t be what it is today without its exceptional team. Kate says, “The charity would not be as successful if it weren’t for the incredible network of people who have helped and assisted in its work over the years. There are far too many to name, but it would be quite remiss if Ujjal, Frank, Ian, Jon, Richard, Kate, Petros, Helen, Rachel, Dawn, James, Christine, and Euan, to specifically name but a few, weren’t mentioned. And also to our incredible fundraisers, without whom the charity could not exist and continue to provide support, information, and encouragement to people affected by thyroid cancer.” Looking towards the future, Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust will continue to support patients for as long as possible, while aiming to provide them with the most up-to-date information. To this end, due to changes in treatment protocols and guidelines, the charity will be producing a new generic film to supersede the existing film, Thyroid Cancer Uncovered. Prior to release, there will be a closed viewing with an invited audience. To learn more about Butterfly Thyroid Cancer Trust or to find out how to access support, please visit the charity website. Northern Enterprise Awards 2025/ 14 Education Changemaker of the Year 2025 – North East Jonny Kay is an education consultant who works with Further Education colleges, Post-16 settings, schools, international organisations and professional networks across the UK and beyond to help strengthen teaching, learning, leadership and culture. After many years in teaching and leadership, Jonny founded his consultancy with one aim: to help people and teams unlock their potential – through CPD, coaching and mentoring, strategic consultancy, and keynote speaking. In every project, Jonny is focused on making sure that professional development is both meaningful and sustainable. “CPD shouldn’t be a tick-box exercise; it should change the way people think, feel, and act – leading to more impactful teaching, stronger leadership and, ultimately, better outcomes for students,” he says. “At the heart of it all, empowerment and reflection are vital.” Jonny blends practical classroom experience, leadership insight and a deeply personal approach, whether he’s facilitating smallgroup CPD, offering individual coaching, or supporting setting-wide improvement. His advice is grounded in research, evidence, and the lived reality of today’s classrooms and teams. “Those I work with often tell me they appreciate that the strategies I share can be applied to students and lessons straight away,” Jonny explains. “I’m not interested in jargon or quick fixes – I want to offer support that makes an immediate difference. Every CPD or coaching session is built collaboratively, with clear steps and follow-up. People know I want them to succeed, and that I’ll be there alongside them.” A consistent thread in Jonny’s work is a culture built on trust, respect and genuine partnership. He believes people do their best work when they feel valued and understood. Whether he’s coaching colleagues or working with leaders, Jonny aims to make every interaction constructive, practical and focused on growth. While he runs his consultancy independently, Jonny is part of a wide professional community across FE, Post-16 and schools. Collaboration plays a significant role in his work – from contributing to national events to representing awarding organisations and exam boards – and he thrives on connecting with teachers and leaders who share a commitment to improving practice. “I’m passionate about translating research and strategy into action – helping teams move from ‘knowing’ to ‘doing’, and making sure good ideas actually work for everyone. My approach is a mix of evidence, empathy and experience, and I think that’s what helps create real, lasting impact.” Reflecting on his recent award win, Jonny is quick to share the credit. “I’d like readers to know that my work – and this award – are both about people. I’ve been fortunate to work with and learn from some phenomenal professionals, and I hope this award represents the support I received early in my career. I’ve always believed that education and leadership are at their best when the focus is on helping others succeed, and that belief drives all of my work. This award is as much a reflection of the exceptional support I’ve received over the years – from the leaders and peers I’ve been lucky to work with, as well as the fantastic support I have at home in Steph and my two girls, Nancy and Maggie.” “Winning the North East Changemaker of the Year Award is an incredible honour, and it motivates me to keep pushing forward – to keep supporting, coaching, and encouraging people to believe in what’s possible. My aim is always to leave every person, team and organisation I work with stronger, more confident and more capable. Hopefully, this award is a sign that this is happening.” Looking ahead, Jonny is developing a series of new CPD frameworks that will focus on leadership development, behaviour culture, and long-term improvement. These will offer practical, evidence-led tools designed to help teachers and leaders embed reflective practice, strengthen wellbeing and build capacity from within. This work will sit alongside the publication of his second book, which explores behaviour management and how educators can create consistently positive environments, both in classrooms and across whole settings. Drawing on real stories, research and practical tools, the book will offer a framework rooted in what actually works. Jonny will also be expanding his keynote and conference work, sharing insights on leadership, change and professional growth with audiences beyond education.
