SME News Q3 2025 / News UK SMEs Say They’ve Been Abandoned: Government Inaction Is Costing Growth, Confidence, and Future New research reveals overwhelming dissatisfaction with UK business support as firms call for urgent, coordinated, digital-first reform Strategies like the UK Digital Strategy 2025 and the AI Playbook showcase long-term vision. Digital integration is also keystone in the UK Industrial Strategy 2025 being recognised as essential to unlock productivity, sustainability, resilience, and innovation across the economy. Yet over 70% of SMEs say they haven’t seen these initiatives deliver practical change. On the ground, business leaders still face basic barriers—weeks of paperwork, repeated verification, and fractured support systems. “AI might be transforming public services,” van Niekerk added, “If SMEs still can’t open a bank account or access funding without being buried in documents, what’s the point? There’s a glaring gap between ambition and execution, and it’s growing wider by the day.” The report outlines how fundamental processes—verifying a business identity, applying for a loan, and onboarding with suppliers remain inefficient and uncoordinated. For SMEs, these delays don’t just mean frustration, they mean missed growth, lost contracts, and declining confidence. “The message from SMEs couldn’t be clearer: government support isn’t reaching them,” van Niekerk said. “We’re calling on the government to move beyond strategy papers and deliver real, joined-up, digital-first infrastructure that empowers businesses to scale—quickly, efficiently, and confidently.” While departments publish roadmaps and commit to transformation, SMEs remain trapped in systems that no longer serve them. Red tape, disjointed infrastructure, and slow policy delivery are not just stalling growth, they’re weakening the UK’s economic resilience. Van Niekerk concluded: “Across the world, business is being rewritten in real time—driven by data, speed, and seamless digital infrastructure. Yet while other nations equip their entrepreneurs with the tools to thrive, UK businesses are being held back by paper-heavy systems and policy inertia. Entrepreneurs cannot power recovery or innovation when they’re still battling processes designed for a different era. If the UK is to remain a serious player on the world stage, it must back its entrepreneurs with more than ambition. It must provide the tools, the reform, and the accountability that turn strategy into progress. Businesses have waited long enough.” UK small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are losing faith in the government’s ability to support them—and it’s threatening the country’s economic future. That’s the warning from new research by Umazi, a digital identity platform for business verification, which reveals a troubling disconnect between government ambition and real-world delivery. According to the findings in the Umazi report, Broken ID, Broken Growth: The UK’s Verification Chokehold, based on a survey of 500 SMEs, over 60% say there is little to no meaningful government innovation aimed at helping them thrive. A further 38% believe progress is too slow, and 28% point out a lack of coordination between agencies as a critical obstacle. “The UK government talks about innovation, but SMEs are still stuck in a system built for the last century,” said Cindy van Niekerk, CEO and Founder of Umazi. “Our most dynamic businesses are wasting time, money, and momentum fighting outdated processes, while policies remain in permanent planning mode.” Confidence in the UK as a business-friendly environment is slipping. Only 32% of SMEs believe the government genuinely prioritises creating a climate for prosperity, and 22% now see other European countries as offering better growth opportunities.

SMEs Need Robust Security Infrastructure to Support the National Ransomware Payment Ban, Says Espria In light of the proposed national ransomware payment ban across public sector services, leading technology solutions provider Espria urges UK businesses to shore up security to mitigate the risk of cyberattacks. The UK government is set to crack down on ransomware with proposed measures to ban the NHS, local councils, schools and other critical services from paying ransoms to cybercriminals. Following a public consultation that saw nearly 75% respondents support the proposal, the new measures will also require private sector businesses to formally report all attacks and notify the government of any intent to pay a ransom. Designed to dismantle the business model that fuels cybercrime by making the UK's vital public services an unprofitable target for attack, these new measures will lead the way in tackling ransomware, bolstering national security and protecting key services and businesses from disruption. According to Brian Sibley, Virtual CTO at Espria, whilst this move is seen as a good thing in signalling to malicious cyber actors that UK businesses aren’t willing to pay ransom demands. “Businesses must support this by doing everything possible to employ robust security strategies, including staff training across their organisation.” “Cutting off the ransom ‘business model’ targets the heart of the issue, as highlighted by the overwhelming public support and widespread news coverage, including recent “Panorama” investigations into the devastating impact of these attacks. Nevertheless, you need to prevent an attack rather than waiting for it to happen, as consistently warned by the National Cyber Security Centre, advocating prevention over payment. Businesses shouldn’t wait to become a victim before acting. “It is crucial to invest in robust systems and specialist cyber security staff training across your organisation to ensure security, alongside regular, detailed threat assessments. This is true for both large institutions and SMEs; regardless of the available budget, it is a necessary routine to follow. Even the most established organisations can be disrupted overnight by ransomware attacks, with reputational and legal repercussions lasting months after.” Sibley continues, “We are already seeing indications that cyber insurance is the new prerequisite for compliance, with insurance underwriters acting almost as regulators for cybersecurity. Adopting recognised frameworks like Cyber Essentials and Cyber Essentials Plus, and enabling compliance with ISO 27001, is a practical way for business leaders to demonstrate they’re taking the right steps. “If businesses are forewarned with proactive security monitoring tools of any threats or gaps in their cyber defences, they are better able to protect themselves from an attack and subsequent breach. For smaller businesses, this means relying on your managed services partner rather than an in-house security expert, but this can be more beneficial as an MSP can access a wider range of security expertise for integrated, all-encompassing and up-to-date technology offerings. Ensuring your recovery plans are in place and tested, including immutable backups, can ensure your business doesn’t crash entirely following an attack. Sibley concludes, “Ultimately, however, all organisations, whatever their size, still have a greater responsibility to ensure that their security posture is up to scratch. In today’s threat landscape, waiting for an attack isn’t an option. Every organisation must do everything it can to stay resilient and secure.”

SME News Q3 2025 / 6 Feature A few months ago, I heard the story of a young estate agent. His father, who runs a small building firm in Hertfordshire, had just lost £60,000 to a phishing scam. All it took was one email. It looked like an invoice for materials he had ordered for a job he’d just taken on. He clicked the link and transferred the money. By the time he realised, the scammers were long gone and so was his money. His bank told him it was too late, they couldn’t help because he’d authorised the payment himself. There was no cyber insurance. No email filtering. No safety net. That £60,000 represented more than money. It meant he couldn’t help pay for his son’s wedding. It shattered his confidence. And for a business turning over about £1 million a year, it was nearly fatal. This isn’t a one-off. It’s happening every day, and it’s getting worse. The Cyber Security Breaches Survey 2025 shows that over 43% of UK businesses and 30% of UK charities experienced a cyberattack in the past year. That’s roughly 612,000 businesses and 61,000 charities. And those are just the ones that reported it. SMEs are the real frontline of this war, not the household names like Marks and Spencer that make the headlines. We’re talking small delivery firms, estate agencies, local builders, accountants, legal advisors, and manufacturers. And the public feels the impact when they fall. One phishing scam disrupted Speedy Deliveries Ltd. operations so badly that they couldn’t fulfil orders across the South of England. Shops didn’t get their stock. Families didn’t get parcels. The company collapsed. Another SME badly affected by cyber crime was Heritage Legal Services who were crippled by ransomware. Client data was compromised, and operations were frozen. In this situation, this meant that real people lost access to justice. Cybercriminals are getting smarter. They’re using AI tools to craft more convincing emails. They mimic writing styles. They scrape data from social media to personalise scams. They combine phishing, Why SMEs Must Wake Up to the Rising Threat of Cybercrime By Peter Boolkah, Award-Winning Global Business Coach and entrepreneur ransomware, and social engineering in layered attacks that are harder to detect and devastating when they land. And SMEs are seen as easy targets, low-hanging fruit. This is because many don’t have even basic defences in place. No multi-factor authentication. No regular backups. No staff training. No insurance. At the same time, they’re more digitally dependent than ever. They use online banking, cloud storage, and digital invoicing, amongst other remote work digital tools. The fact is that every added convenience is also a new vulnerability. However, most SMEs wouldn’t last a week without access to their systems. If you own or run an SME, you cannot afford to ignore cybercrime. A serious cyberattack can destroy your business. Research shows 60-70% of SMEs shut down within two years of a major breach. The financial damage is just the start; there’s also reputational harm, lost clients, legal trouble, and emotional toll. It doesn’t even have to be your own systems that are hit. You could go down because a supplier gets compromised. You might rely on software that gets breached. Your data could be leaked by a third-party vendor. This is a chain, and you’re only as strong as your weakest link. I get asked by clients what they as SME’s can do, and it’s simple. You don’t need a million-pound IT department, but you do need a plan and to start with the basics. Invest in email safety and filtering tools that can block known phishing attempts before they ever reach your inbox. Educate your team. Many attacks succeed simply because someone clicked a dodgy link or used a weak password. Make sure that you back up your files regularly and store them securely off-site. If ransomware hits, you’ll need a clean version of your systems to restore from. Cyber insurance is not just for big corporations. It can be a lifeline if you suffer an attack. One of the easiest and most effective ways to protect your accounts is with two-factor authentication. Finally, know who to call and what steps to take if the worst happens. Cybersecurity is now as essential as locking the front door of your premises. It’s a matter of survival. Remember that protecting your business is protecting your people, your team, your clients and your suppliers. Don’t let your business be the next target for cybercriminals.

Feature In an era defined by economic uncertainty and rising operational costs, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence (AI) to drive efficiency and innovation. Business lending platform Funding Circle, which has supported over 110,000 UK SMEs, reveals how AI can help small businesses grow smarter, not just faster, in 2025 and beyond. The rise of AI-powered SMEs SMEs are increasingly prioritising digital transformation and technology investment over physical expansion while maintaining a strong appetite for growth. UK businesses reported a 21% increase in AI budgets in the past twelve months, showing a growing commitment to using AI. New research from Amazon Web Services (AWS) shows that 52% of UK businesses are now using AI, up 33% in the past year, outpacing the European average. And 92% of those AI adopters report a direct increase in revenue. The skills gap challenge However, a growing digital skills gap threatens to stall momentum. According to AWS’s 2025 AI report, 38% of UK businesses cite lack of AI skills as the main barrier to adoption, up from 29% the previous year. With AI literacy expected to be required in nearly half (47%) of all new UK jobs over the next three years, both employers and employees are prioritising digital upskilling. For employees, AI stands out as the most in-demand area for upskilling, with 40% of respondents identifying AI as the top priority for training. This growing appetite for AI-related skills reflects the technology’s increasing integration into daily operations, decision-making, and product development across sectors. Five ways SMEs can use AI to fuel growth: According to recent data, 59% of startups have adopted AI, compared to just 25% of large enterprises, highlighting how nimble, high-growth businesses are outpacing traditional corporates in embracing emerging technology. How Small Businesses Can Use AI to Grow Smarter — Not Just Faster Funding Circle shares practical insights on how UK SMEs can leverage AI to boost productivity and resilience in 2025 1. Improve customer experience: AI-powered chatbots and virtual assistants offer 24/7 support, while machine learning can personalise customer journeys to increase loyalty and conversion. 3. Smarter marketing: AI tools can help SMEs create tailored campaigns, generate content, and predict customer behaviour, allowing for better outcomes with smaller teams and budgets. 4. Streamline recruitment: AI-powered hiring tools can help SMEs screen candidates, analyse CVs, and even support onboarding, reducing time-to-hire and improving talent matching. 5. Data-driven decision-making: AI can quickly analyse sales trends and customer behaviour, helping SMEs make strategic choices and optimise campaigns in real time. Funding the future of AI-driven growth Despite the opportunities, AI implementation can require upfront investment—from hiring talent and purchasing tools to integrating infrastructure and staying compliant with regulations. Nearly half (48%) of startups cite access to funding as a critical enabler of their tech strategy. That’s where Funding Circle comes in. Here we explore the company’s growth over the past decade as it is awarded with two accolades in our IT Awards 2025. It’s 2015 and two individuals - both majorly successful in their fields - decide to create a business. It has to be close-knit. It must have a sense of humility, but, mixed in with monumental hard work, and no compromise on the goal. Fast forward to 2025 and you will see a bigger team, all with the same core values and shared vision. Serving a wide range of clients and customers, TGG has swiftly yet steadily established itself as a reliable partner for digital growth. Its lead generation, e-commerce marketing, crypto marketing, and Shopify development skills have truly pushed the company to the forefront of the all-important sector, and has resulted in highprofile partnerships – including brands of great global status such as TikTok, Google, and Meta. As a performance marketing specialist, the enterprise continues to positively impact, grow, and enrich its customers’ online presence – with monumental achievements going hand-in-hand with its dedication. For example, TGG generated over 6 million leads and 3.3 million cases for clients in the legal sector. This demonstrates that its team’s hard work is not only admirable but entirely successful. Its ability to enhance measurable business outcomes with its digital innovation and commitment to a brighter future for its partnerships has also solidified its position as a one-stop-shop for lead generation, e-commerce, and, of course, digital growth in every way. This full-service creative and digital marketing agency is truly making waves in terms of growth, both having steadily expanded over the past decade and in its future plans – both near and distant. TGG has recently committed itself to a new office space of 14,000 sq. ft nestled in Altrincham town centre, moving its headquarters to the well-known Foundation. The past three years has seen TGG drive over £2.3bn worth of sales for its clients, countless campaigns for charities, including one founded by Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke, and £107 million in growth of its customer base. These huge landmarks are representative of the hard work the entire team put in on a daily basis, so that not only TGG can thrive but also so that its customers can reap the benefits. Aiding SMEs and Fortune500 companies to gain and connect with more online clients, TGG utilises its creative, strategic, and proven techniques to help others to flourish. Designing and managing strategic content, in addition to social media marketing campaigns, the company helps others to target the best leads to close sales, form partnerships, and deliver business growth via digital means. TGG’s strong focus on sustainability – for the planet and its people – is reflected in its choice to re-establish its headquarters to Foundation, through a partnership between Bruntwood and Trafford Council. Having chosen an office with a diverse assortment of amenities designed to enrich both productivity and wellbeing, the company is sure to have all it needs to elevate its methods to the next level. Taking good care of its team, TGG has picked the perfect spot which includes wellness studios to encourage deeper levels of self-care, closer links to transportation for shorter commute times or issues, and a space sustainably balanced using biophilia. As the Foundation's structure is constructed of living walls, with natural light throughout, 36,000 plants grown by ‘I Want Plants’ in South Manchester, and more, both TGG’s team and our planet will benefit from this positive move. Atop this, in close quarters with TGG’s work for charities, the company takes pride in supporting the mental health of its team. To encourage even more healthy minds, the relocation to Foundation will be an exciting start to a new chapter of creativity, deeper happiness, and even more growth. As mentioned, TGG’s interaction with, and support of, Clarke’s charity SameYou stems from the team’s philanthropic drive. The company fully supports the charity which helps to enrich the lives of those in recovery treatment for survivors of brain injuries – aiding them in their steps towards living a happier and mentally healthier life again. In the same vein, TGG also works on a plethora of other philanthropic endeavours. Having donated over £100,000 to charities and having worked closely with Make-A-Wish Foundation – where the company had provided experiences for those the charity supports – the business’ values of partnership, support, and care are ultimately ingrained into all it does. Its daily work, with regards to crypto marketing, lead generation, e-commerce support and development, and more, continues to result in skyrocketing leads, deals, partnerships, and customer bases for its clients. Furthermore, with its guidance, businesses can develop their own strategies that are able to stand the test of time as TGG delivers all the tools necessary to enhance digital strategies, content creation and management, and higher conversion rates from lead to sale. With not just one, but two world class, award-winning space-saving bed ranges, ‘WISKAWAY’® Visitor Wallbeds and ‘GLIDEAWAY’® Visitor Guestbeds, the company has set the benchmark for the sector, enabling a family member, partner, friend, or carer to stay in comfort overnight in Hospital, to support a patient throughout their in-patient treatment, with minimal loss of daytime Ward space. Read on to learn how this came about. right next to the patient’s bed. In short, they were in a class all of their own and nothing else on the market could come close. So when a whole series of dedicated new Children’s Hospitals was planned/constructed in the early 2000’s, Hospital Visitor Beds’ ‘WISKAWAY’® Wallbeds were uniquely placed to provide state-of-theart parents’ bed accommodation and orders came in from all over the country. Not just designed to save space, these Visitor Wallbeds offered a host of key additional benefits for their users (hospital staff and visitors alike) including safety, comfort, ease-of-handling, time and cost savings, durability and value for money. But Hospital Visitor Beds doesn’t stop at just offering exceptional products, they’re dedicated to supporting their customers every step of the way and their comprehensive after-sales service is designed to ensure that their customers’ investment continues to deliver, year after year, offering a full spares, installation/re-location service and (optional) periodic servicing. ‘WISKAWAY’® Visitor Wallbeds come in Horizontal and Vertical versions, single, double and made-to-measure sizes and a wide selection of finishes and, because Hospital Visitor Beds make these beds to order, they can be very flexible about any special customer requirements. Building on the success of their fixed ‘WISKAWAY’® Visitor Wallbeds, the company then turned their attention to the mobile Hospital/Hospice guest bed market where, again, most products were (and still are) noncompliant and unsuitable. The result was their new ‘GLIDEAWAY’® Visitor Guestbed, (today a whole ‘family’ of guest beds), based on the same unbeatable standards as their ‘WISKAWAY’® Wallbeds and available with wipe-clean/waterproof mattresses, in single, double and special sizes and a choice of 10 bedframe colours. The ’GLIDEAWAY’® set completely new standards of safety, comfort, ease-of-handling, durability and value for money and could be madeup and used, whenever and wherever required. It took the Hospital/ Hospice guest bed market ‘by storm’ and is now the ‘go to’ choice, supported by the same unique spares/after-sales service as Hospital Visitor Beds’ wall beds. “The fact that we are serial disruptors and innovators, have been the top specialists for over 40 years and offer the two leading, ‘best lifetime value’, product ranges in the Hospital/Hospice Visitor bed field, is what has made us the most trusted Visitor bed supplier” says Founder and MD, John Miller. “Unlike our competitors, we make a point of staying in close contact with our customers and can always be relied on to help: servicing, modifying and even moving our (fixed) beds, if required. When costed over their amazingly long working lives, our Visitor beds also work out FAR better value and have a lower carbon footprint than anything comparable on the market”. Liverpool Mercedes, Anfield is a multi-award-winning company comprising technicians well versed in handling all of the Mercedes-Benz and AMG needs of their clients. These qualified and knowledgeable staff share more than 55 years of hands-on experience between them, and pledge to take care of every motor as if it were their own. Recognised as the Best Independent Mercedes Specialist 2025 – Liverpool, we caught up with the owner, Steve Madden, for more on the business. The Home of Mercedes Repairs and Services in Liverpool For an annual service to a ground-up engine rebuild, Liverpool Mercedes, Anfield is always right by the side of its clients. Boasting the stamp of approval from the RAC – underpinning its quality repairs, honest pricing, and exceptional customer service – this independent specialist offers a range of services delivered under the aim of keeping client vehicles in the best condition. The best part is that this is offered at a fraction of the cost of dealership prices, with all work being logged in the official Mercedes database. Wirth its convenient location – five minutes outside of Liverpool city centre – to boot, the company prides itself on delivering these expert services right on the doorstep of its Merseyside clientele. This local touch is seen from the moment a client walks through the doors of Unit 2 on Castor Street, where they are afforded a welcoming environment that makes them feel at ease about leaving their beloved motor in someone else’s hands. Clients also love how thorough the team here are with their explanations. “Feedback from our clients praises how we explain the work required to be carried out on their vehicles in full, meaning they understand exactly what they are paying for and why they are paying for the repair.” The honest and transparent nature of Liverpool Mercedes, Anfield has led to the company completing a number of projects lately, many for first-timers. This includes diagnosing and repairing an issue on a client’s C-Class and servicing the E-Class of a client whose first Mercedes it was. Both clients left glowing accounts of their experience, with this excerpt reflecting the company’s standout nature: “I always like to find a local, independent specialist for my cars, and from start to finish, the experience here was perfect.” Similarly, the second client shared: “I was really anxious to get my Mercedes E 220 serviced. I called these guys, and they gave me a complete breakdown and advised a few extras that were necessary. Steve showed me the parts after removing and advised what was needed, quoting an excellent price and getting the job done in two hours. Everything was logged on Mercedes’ database and they provided me with a printout. I would definitely recommend them for anyone looking for excellent Mercedes work at a good price.” These testimonials are just the tip of the iceberg, and it is this that keeps Steve and the rest of the team here – which has doubled in size in just a few years as a result of the excellence they demonstrate – serving clients six days a week from their Anfield base. Interestingly, despite the passion Steve has for this work, owning an independent Mercedes repair garage was not always on the cards for him, as he initially wanted to join the Royal Marines after leaving school. However, on the advice of his brother-inlaw, who was himself in the Marines, Steve went out to find a trade, going around the local dealerships with his father and handing out his CV. The rest is history, with Steve quickly finding his niche in Merc repairs and eventually starting this specialist business in 2021. For those looking to follow in his footsteps and create a successful SME, Steve shares some invaluable advice: “Be an honest person, because being honest brings respect and trust. Don’t chase money, aim for customer retention.” He continued: “Turn up every day and you are already further than where you were yesterday. We implement that here, as turning up each day and providing the service we provide keeps clients on the road.” Finally, touching on the future plans for Liverpool’s leading independent Mercedes specialist, Steve told us how the team would love to one day own their own body shop, as well as a second repair site in the surrounding area. Also, he added, there are talks ongoing about buying their own stock of vehicles to sell at their current Anfield site.
