UK Enterprise Awards 2026

Metallurgy is a longstanding practice with a rich history behind it. Its incredibly complex roots run deep into the past and it has evolved over time alongside our society’s ever-growing needs. Although we continue to rely on metallurgy processes in our everyday lives, the industry is facing a decline, especially in the UK. With no access to government funding or grants, M&C has been up against a tough environment, but its experienced and committed team operates seamlessly to keep the practice alive and well for the years to come. Managing Director/Principal Academic Richard Brown told us: “M&C was formed from an impressive historical background, from Bradford College which went back to the early 1900 providing Further and Higher Education.” M&C recognises that metallurgy and casting, as an entire process, ultimately enriches the entire manufacturing engineering sphere. Responding to the critical need for training within this industry, especially outside the ‘institutional norm,’ this organisation does all it can to address the challenges of the present day. Delivering a curriculum which directly responds to evolving metallurgical processes, sciences, and maths, as well as the knowledge and skills needed in the industry, M&C offers a variety of educational resources for its clients to build their own programme of study for part time students and their employers. From core modules in several metallurgical sciences and maths to work based projects, its original Industrial Employers Advisor board offering and supporting training opportunities, advanced studies, and Practical Metallography and Failure Investigation. Introducing M&C’s own learning platform, Moodle, it’s clear to see why the organisation continues to be a strong partner for learners. This eLearning platform was built on the foundation of its team’s experience and expertise, to deliver only the most comprehensive and cutting-edge modules. Richard added: “We have produced our own modules from scratch, to cater for core and optional modules across diverse industrial communities.” Of course, M&C’s programme modules all trace back to its original mission of educating individuals in the world of metallurgy and casting so that they can succeed in such a crucial industry. Backed by its passionate team, M&C provides all manners of professional development support which not only aids individuals to expand their skillset but also keeps this age-old industry alive. “M&C’s innovative approach to our programmes, Return-to-Learn and First Step packages, Communications Skills Workshop, Independent Study and Industrial Mentor Training are, in their entirety, a new concept and are supported by M&C’s very experienced Academic teams.” The years ahead are going to be the make or break moments for metallurgy in manufacturing engineering but, with M&C on hand, the industry is sure to rise again. Partnering with M&C means a lifeline for part-time students, lifelong professional development, and the process of closing the skill gap for metallurgy. Here at SME News we’re delighted to announce M&C’s award of Best Metallurgy Training Provider 2026, especially as the organisation continues to currently offer non-regulated eLearning programmes, the application process will be continued to become Ofqual approved with Kitemark Providing individuals with such reliable and regulated modules not only helps them to receive the highest level of education in the field but it also points to the rebirth of such a valued craft that shouldn’t be lost or forgotten.
