UK Enterprise Awards 2026

The Artea Room is an independent tearoom based in Potterspury, near Towcester. Owned and run by husband-and-wife team, Joanne and Alan Ferguson, the tearoom caters to a wide variety of clientele. Since taking over the business in December 2024, Joanne and Alan have worked hard to completely refresh both the venue and the overall customer experience. What was once quite dark and tired has gradually been transformed into a brighter, cleaner and more inviting space, with a strong focus on attention to detail and friendly service. The tearoom serves a mix of breakfasts, lunches, homemade cakes, speciality teas and afternoon teas, which have become one of its signature offerings. Alongside day-to-day trade, the venue has also started hosting small celebrations and private gatherings, including birthdays, baby showers and wedding receptions. Attention to detail matters to the team at The Artea Room, and Joanne and Alan take a lot of pride in what leaves the kitchen. Whether it is a breakfast, an afternoon tea, a coffee or a homemade cake. It is this which makes the tearoom stand out from competitors and keeps people returning. “Our customers are a real mix of local regulars, visitors from surrounding towns and people travelling specifically to visit us after seeing recommendations online or through social media,” Alan explains. “One of the things we are most proud of is the number of repeat customers we now see each week. There is something really rewarding about watching people introduce others to The Artea Room and gradually helping us build a wider community around the business.” The tearoom’s unique selling point is its atmosphere and personal experience that has been created, and the team regularly receive positive feedback from customers who appreciate being able to relax, spend quality time with friends and family and enjoy good food without feeling rushed. “One of our biggest strengths is being flexible and hands-on,” elaborates Alan. “We are constantly tweaking the layout of the tearoom to accommodate different group sizes, celebrations and events, and we put a lot of effort into making sure every part of the business feels welcoming and well presented, including our outdoor seating area.” The Artea Room also puts a huge amount of time into maintaining its online presence through social media and our website, as word of mouth and customer recommendations are incredibly important. One of the biggest challenges in hospitality at the moment is the economic environment. The cost of ingredients, utilities, staffing and supplies continues to rise, while customers themselves are also being far more careful about how and where they spend their money. The couple are very conscious of the current economic climate and the pressures placed on people. Therefore, they work hard to ensure that pricing remains fair and accessible while still maintaining high quality. “Because of these economic issues, we think service matters more than ever,” Alan states. “Customers want value for money, but they also want to feel welcomed, appreciated and looked after, and increasingly looking for experiences rather than just somewhere to quickly eat and leave. Being a UK-based tearoom allows us to celebrate a small part of that traditional British culture in a modern and welcoming way.” Recently, for its commitment to providing exceptional customer service, The Artea Room received the accolade of Best Independent Tearoom Experience 2026 – Northamptonshire in the UK Enterprise Awards 2026. As an added bonus, the tearoom also clinched the coveted Guest Hospitality Excellence Award 2026. But what does the future hold? A big priority over the next 12–24 months is continuing to improve the customer experience while protecting the atmosphere and service standards that people value. Joanne and Alan have also invested in technology to support the business, with Alan designing and building a bespoke booking system specifically around the needs of The Artea Room, as well as building and maintaining the website himself. “Long term, we want to continue building a business that people trust and recommend to others,” adds Alan. “For us, growth is not just about getting busier - it is about maintaining the quality, atmosphere and personal touch that people come back for. We would like to finish by saying a huge thank you to our customers. The support we receive from regular customers, many of whom visit week after week, genuinely means a great deal to us.” Contact: Alan Ferguson Company: The Artea Room Web Address: www.artearoom.co.uk Countryside café, The Artea Room, offers delicious snacks, wholesome meals, speciality teas, and scrumptious homemade cakes.
