Turning Vision into Reality: Strategic Tech Leadership for Growing SMEs

RJJ Software: Award-Winning Strategic Tech Consultancy for SMEs

Today, organisations are finding themselves overwhelmed by the rapid evolving of modern technologies. This includes the emergence of AI, with which, they are often stuck between two extremes: Do they rush to implement AI everywhere without strategy? Or do they wait on the sidelines while their competitors gain advantages? Enter RJJ Software, founded by software engineering expert, Jamie Taylor in 2018, a strategic technology consultancy that can provide all the answers and advice needed. Recognised as our Best Strategic SME Tech Consultancy 2025, we speak to Jamie to gain a deeper insight into the key role RJJ Software is playing in the digital transformation of clients such as Formula 1.

Jamie’s technology journey stems back to when he was just six years old; he fondly remembers his parents bringing home the first family computer, an Amstrad CPC 464. “It didn’t have an operating system or pre-installed applications,” Jamie recalls. “You could load games from cassette tape, but if you wanted to do anything useful, you had to write the programs yourself.”

The computer came with a manual on the BASIC programming language, and Jamie spent the entire summer learning how to make things happen onscreen. “I remember the moment I finally got a stick figure to walk across the display; an achievement that required understanding loops, timing, and graphics coordinates,” he reminisces. “The joy wasn’t just in the accomplishment; it was in making the computer do exactly what I envisioned.”

He continues, “That wide-eyed six-year-old’s fascination never faded. I’ve been fortunate to spend my adult life in technology, and that same drive still motivates me today. I chose this industry because it lets me combine technical depth, strategic thinking, continuous learning, and meaningful impact. That combination is what keeps me as engaged today as I was that summer at age six; except now, I get to help others experience that same joy of turning vision into reality.”

Jamie’s focus has shifted a lot throughout his career. Early on, he was obsessed with the ‘how’: how to write elegant code, architect scalable systems, and implement complex algorithms. However, after nearly 20 years building software, he realised the most impactful thing isn’t just making the technology work, but it’s about helping organisations understand which technology problems are worth solving in the first place. Understanding both the technical limitations and practical business applications of technology, Jamie can help clients avoid expensive mistakes and succeed in the digital world.

“What drives me now isn’t just the technology itself; it’s the interaction of technology, business strategy, and human impact.”

Jamie explains, “The transition to fractional CTO and strategic consulting came from recognising a pattern: the most valuable conversations I had with clients weren’t about implementation details. They were about: “Should we build this or buy it?”, “Is this architecture decision going to scale with our business?”, “How do we know if we’re investing in the right technology priorities?”, and “What does our team need to grow into leaders, not just developers?”. These strategic questions determine whether organisations thrive or struggle, and they require someone who understands technology deeply but thinks about it through a business and human lens.”

RJJ Software’s flagship fractional CTO and strategic technology consulting services have become increasingly relevant as more companies recognise their need for senior technology leadership without the high price tag or commitment of a full-time C-suite hire. With RJJ Software, companies can make the most of Jamie’s 20 years of technology leadership experience, whether start-up, SME, or elite-level industry including Formula 1, on a flexible, 2-4-days-per-month-basis.

Its service includes: strategic technology direction in the form of independent guidance on architecture decisions, technology stack selections, and modernisation roadmaps; technology due diligence, covering critical assessments for investors, boards, or acquirers evaluating technical estates, team capability, and scalability; comprehensive architecture and security reviews to identify technical debt, security vulnerabilities, and scaling bottlenecks before they become crises; and engineering leadership development to mentor first-time CTOs and engineering managers to develop internal knowledge and capability.

“That six-year-old making a stick figure walk across the screen was learning that technology is a tool for making ideas real. Today, I help organisations realise their digital potential, whether that’s building the right systems, making smarter technology investments, or developing their team’s capabilities.”

Clients don’t only benefit from Jamie’s technical expertise in .NET, cloud architecture, and application security, but also from his network and credibility, and direct connections at Microsoft, among other goliath technology companies. This is in addition to insights featured on his The Modern .NET Show podcast, where he has interviewed more than 150 technology leaders. Thus, RJJ Software’s clients have access to multiple perspectives from conversations with industry leaders, as opposed to being restricted to the opinion of just one consultant.

Jamie says, “Through The Modern .NET Show, I get to explore how technology leaders think about technological challenges. Through my consulting work, I get to help organisations navigate them. Through my open-source work like OwaspHeaders.Core, I can improve security for applications I’ll never directly touch.”

Most importantly, RJJ Software’s offering is designed for speed, meaning clients gain rapid clarity and actionable outcomes. Issues are identified within days, along with quick delivery of prioritised recommendations and implementation roadmaps, ready for internal teams to execute without delay.

“The technology industry remains endlessly fascinating because it’s fundamentally about problem-solving and possibility. Every client engagement represents unique challenges. Every podcast conversation reveals new perspectives. Every industry development opens new opportunities to help organisations succeed.”

Notably, RJJ Software worked with a global logistics organisation to assess its technology strategy and identify areas for improvement. Within the first week, Jamie had identified five critical areas for improvement across architecture, security, and operational efficiency; delivered two strategic presentations to executive leadership, reframing their technology roadmap; and created working proof-of-concept demos with practical solutions to issues that were previously difficult to manage. Thus, quick ROI was achieved which paid for the engagement multiple times over.

The client company’s CIO expresses their delight: “Jamie is an absolute rockstar. Within a week of him working with us, he had already identified five different areas for improvement, given two inspiring talks, and created a handful of engaging demos, all leading to almost immediate ROI.”

As RJJ Software looks toward the future, there is a five-year innovation strategy in place that focuses on two goals. The fractional CTO model is still relatively new to the UK market, so the plan is to refine, formalise, and make strategic technology leadership accessible to more organisations. The company also seeks to continue hosting apprentices and T-Level students to give the next generation the best start to their careers.
