Timber Wood: What to know for your next project

There are few building materials as heavily used as timber. Timber plays a massive role in all kinds of construction projects, which is why it is so important for contractors and those in the construction industry to have a strong understanding of this building material. Essentially, timber is wood that has been processed into beams and planks and is often used for structural purposes thanks to its strength and durability and the fact that it is renewable. This post will tell you everything that you need to know about timber.

Using Timber Wood

One of the reasons why timber is such a common building material is that it can be used for so many big and small projects because it is so strong, attractive, and renewable. Timber can be used as a frame for buildings, fencing, floorboards, furniture, and even paper and cardboard once the wood has been pulped. Even the bark from the wood can be used for chipping, wood fuel, and mulch. This means that nothing goes to waste with timber and a well-managed forest can last forever.

What to know before using Timber Wood

Timber is a fantastic building material to use that has many great properties. You will also find that there are many different types of timber, which means that you need to know what these are and consider the type of project that you are undertaking. Softwood timber is a good option for those that are on a budget, but this will require treating (more on this below). Hardwood timber is the premium option due to its durability and beautifully rich colour, although it can be harder to work with. You will also find it helpful to know the timber terminology so that you can understand the different types available.

Treated Vs Untreated Timber

Treated or untreated timer is another important decision and one that will depend on the project. Untreated timber is the more “natural” option for sustainable projects and is more affordable, but keep in mind that this can shorten the lifespan and you are opening yourself up to rot, insects, and general wear. Therefore, treated timber is often the best option as you can protect the wood, increase the lifespan and make the wood easier to maintain. When shopping for treated timber, you will want to make sure that you find a reputable manufacturer for timber for the best products.

Hopefully, you have now gained a better understanding of timber. Timber has always been a popular choice in construction projects and it has many positive qualities, but it is important to be aware of the different types and the difference between treated and untreated timber so that you can find the best option for your project.
