Dalgarno Supplementary School

Dalgarno Supplementary School was established in 1999 at the Dalgarno Community Centre in response to a recognised need within the local community for Arabic language and cultural education. The school initially delivered five two-hour sessions each week and, under the leadership of its Chairman, Mohamed Benrahma, quickly developed plans to broaden its educational provision to include mathematics, sports, and English classes for adults. In its formative years, the school encountered significant financial challenges, particularly in securing sufficient funding to meet the costs of rent and teachers' salaries. To strengthen the school's long-term sustainability, a Partnership Pact was developed during late 2001 and early 2002 and formally signed on 23 January 2002. Although the pact was not a legally binding agreement, it represented a shared commitment by partner organisations to support the school's growth and development. The agreement has since been reviewed and updated annually to ensure it remains responsive to the school's changing needs. On 16 December 2002, Dalgarno Supplementary School was formally constituted by members of the local community and subsequently registered as a charity in England and Wales (Charity No. 1096275) in February 2003. The charity's purpose is to advance the education of children and young people aged 6 to 16 within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea through a range of educational and recreational activities. These include the teaching of Arabic, English, mathematics, and science, alongside educational visits to local museums and places of cultural interest. The school also delivers a sports programme, with a particular emphasis on football, to promote healthy lifestyles, encourage positive behaviour, foster personal development, and empower children and young people from socially excluded ethnic minority communities.
